in this study, we assessed the relative contribution of organic and inorganic solutes to osmotic adjustment (oa) in three almond rootstocks subjected to four levels of soil salinity. the results showed that leaf water and osmotic potentials were affected by salinity in gf677 and bitter almond, but less so in gn15, suggesting a higher selectivity for k+ and ca2+ against na+ in this latter rootst...

DFT-based modeling as well as experimental examination of model keto nucleosides have revealed that high susceptibility of these compounds to acids is due to formation of intermediate cyclonucleoside cations of low energy. Theoretically established chemical structures of these previously overlooked intermediates explain the reaction courses for a cluster of nucleoside reactions.

Comparative effects of partial root-zone irrigation (PRI) and deficit irrigation (DI) on xylem pH, ABA, and ionic concentrations of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) plants were investigated in two split-root pot experiments. Results showed that PRI plants had similar or significantly higher xylem pH, which was increased by 0.2 units relative to DI plants. Nitrate and total ionic concentratio...

in this study, the feasibility of using magnetic technology to reduce the dispersion of soil has been investigated. the reference treatment was potable water and 3 magnetic water devices (with different magnetic intensities) were used for magnetizing the potable water. the results showed that the magnetic field has a significant effect in order of 5 percent on increasing of magnesium concentrat...

α-Lactalbumin is the second major protein in bovine milk (2-5% of the total protein in bovine milk). The human variant has several physiologic functions in the neonatal period. In the mammary gland, it participates in lactose synthesis and facilitates milk production and secretion. α-Lactalbumin binds divalent cations (Ca Zn) and may facilitate the absorption of essential minerals. Also, it pro...

salinity is one of the most brutal environmental stresses that hamper crop productivity worldwide approximately 10% of the total land surface is salt affected and about 10 million hectare of agricultural land is lost annually due to salinization and water logging. this study was conducted to determine the ion exchanges in halocnemum strobilaceum and halostachys caspica in saline conditions. the...

This paper presents the results of an investigation on the effects of concentration of cations on activated sludge properties and membrane fouling in submerge membrane bioreactors. The working volume of the experimental setup was two liters. The cellulose acetate membrane was immersed in the bioreactor. The flocculability, settling properties and fouling propensity of activated sludge was measu...

JCB • VOLUME 212 • NUMBER 1 • 2016 4 Histone modifi cations come in many fl avors—phosphorylation, methylation, acetylation, and ubiquitination—that interact with each other to regulate the folding state of chromatin, with profound effects on gene expression. For example, histone acetylation reduces the affi nity of histone N termini for DNA, promoting chromatin relaxation and allowing transcri...

Small-molecule ligands for stabilizing the G-quadruplex in telomeres are promising chemotherapeutic agents. Despite extensive research, few G-quadruplex-stabilizing ligands have been clinically approved to date. We hypothesized that metal ions may be able to interfere with the ligand-mediated stabilization of the G-quadruplex. Here we found that several metal ions could interfere with the Na(+)...
