Epiphrenic diverticulum is rare, comprising of about 10% of all esophageal diverticula. Carcinoma arising within such a diverticulum is even less common. We report on two patients with squamous cell carcinoma arising from an epiphrenic diverticulum. Some features of malignant change related to the epiphrenic diverticula were misdiagnosed or missed in our cases and other reports due to lack of c...

BACKGROUND Epiphrenic diverticula are rare outpouchings of the distal esophagus that infrequently require surgical intervention for the treatment of symptoms. In cases where surgical therapy is indicated, the traditional approach is through a thoracotomy. Advances in minimally invasive techniques have led to thoracoscopic and more recently laparoscopic management of epiphrenic diverticula. The ...

The established management of epiphrenic diverticula combines diverticulectomy with myotomy of the distal esophagus including the lower esophageal sphincter. We report a patient with prompt recurrence of an epiphrenic diverticulum after laparoscopic transhiatal diverticulectomy associated with esophagomyotomy and partial posterior fundoplication due to an incomplete myotomy.

Epiphrenic diverticulum of the lower third of the esophagus is a relatively rare disorder. We present the case of a large, 7.5 cm diameter esophageal epiphrenic diverticulum treated by the laparoscopic approach. Surgery was indicated by the severity of the patient's symptoms and size of the diverticulum. A laparoscopic transhiatal diverticulectomy with a myotomy and Dor fundoplication was carri...

OBJECTIVE To quantitate and characterize the motility abnormalities present in patients with epiphrenic diverticula and to assess the outcome of surgical treatment undertaken according to these abnormalities. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA The concept that epiphrenic diverticula are complications of esophageal motility disorders rather than primary anatomic abnormalities is gradually becoming accept...
