BACKGROUND A large outbreak of diarrhea and the hemolytic-uremic syndrome caused by an unusual serotype of Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (O104:H4) began in Germany in May 2011. As of July 22, a large number of cases of diarrhea caused by Shiga-toxin-producing E. coli have been reported--3167 without the hemolytic-uremic syndrome (16 deaths) and 908 with the hemolytic-uremic syndrome (3...

Travelers' diarrhea is a major public health problem. From patients in whom diarrhea developed after travel to India, 5 enteroaggregative Escherichia coli strains carrying β-lactamase CTX-M-15 were identified; 3 belonged to clonal complex sequence type 38. This β-lactamase contributes to the multidrug resistance of enteroaggregative E. coli, thereby limiting therapeutic alternatives.

Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) is a newly diarrheagenic agent wherein several predominant serotypes are reported. We studied the association between those serotypes, as clonal indicators, and the trait of enteroaggregative adherence to host cells, tested by polymerase chain reaction. We also evaluated the clinical manifestations of infection in 17 hospitalized children by our most co...

Abstract Background and objectives: Diarrhea is one of the main cases of morbidity and mortality among children in developing countries. Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAggEC) is an emerging diarrheal pathogen that has been associated characteristically with persistent diarrhea among infants, particularly in the developing Counties. Therefore, we decided to study the prevalence of enteroag...

conclusions overall, except for pcvd432 and aggr, we detected high heterogeneity of virulence factors among eaec isolates causing diarrhea in children. one set of genes, in the combination, pic- sepa- agg4a, was associated with strong biofilm. results among the 322 e. coli isolated, 23 were identified as eaec. all eaec carried a 630-bp fragment of the plasmid (paa) encoded pcvd432 and aggr gene...

To study the association of multidrug-resistant enteroaggregative Escherichia coli with persistent diarrhea in Kenyan children, stool specimens were obtained from 862 outpatients under 5 years of age from July 1991 to June 1993. E. coli O44 was identified as the sole bacterial pathogen in four patients experiencing at least 14 days of fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. Disk diffusion testing showed...

background : enteroaggregative e. coli (eaec) is increasingly recognized as a cause of often persistent diarrhea in children and adults in both developing and developed countries. the aim of the present study was to investigate the presence and the frequency of eaec as etiologic agent of diarrhea in shiraz. methods : a total of 715 stool samples were collected from patients with diarrhea in shi...

BACKGROUND Escherichia coli can experience a multifaceted life, in some cases acting as a commensal while in other cases causing intestinal and/or extraintestinal disease. Several studies suggest enteroaggregative E. coli are the predominant cause of E. coli-mediated diarrhea in the developed world and are second only to Campylobacter sp. as a cause of bacterial-mediated diarrhea. Furthermore, ...
