background: cerebral malaria (cm) is one of the major causes of death in african populations infected with plasmodium falciparum. only 1% of infected subjects develop cm. the reasons for these differences are not fully understood, but it is likely that the host humoral response against blood-stage antigens plays a role in protection from malaria, although the precise targets and mechanisms medi...

We studied 50 cases of complicated falciparum malaria in order to evaluate the different clinical presentations. Thirty five had cerebral malaria while 15 presented with extracerebral features including diarrhea and vomiting (n = 6), hepatitis (n = 4), acute renal failure (n = 3), and gastrointestinal bleeding (n = 2). These cases were treated with quinine. Mortality was higher in extracerebral...

Malaria is major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The highest incidence of malaria in the world is South East Asia. India is most affected country followed by Indonesia and Myanmar. The prevalence of malaria varies according to geographical region. Diagnosis of malaria infection has been underestimated. Here, we report a case of under-diagnosed complicated vivax malaria in one-yr-old...

The clinical outcome of falciparum malaria in endemic areas is influenced by erythrocyte polymorphisms including the ABO blood groups. Studies have reported association of ABO blood group to resistance, susceptibility, and severity of P. falciparum malaria infection. Individuals with blood group "A" have been found to be highly susceptible to falciparum malaria whereas blood group "O" is said t...

Plasmodium infection (mainly p. falciparum) is usually complicated by cerebral malaria, haemolysis, acute kidney injury and respiratory distress. Myocardial involvement is a rare complication of plasmodium infection. We have reported a case of plasmodium infection (p. vivax) complicated by myocarditis.

Introduction: Malaria is among the most significant travel-related infections encountered by travelers to endemic countries in terms of morbidity and mortality. In Qatar, imported malaria has increased over the last 5 years; 493 travel-related cases were confirmed in 2016. In the current study, the knowledge of malaria chemoprophylaxis among physicians in the State of Qatar was...

Receptors encoded within the Natural Killer Cell (NKC) complex and Killer Immunoglobulin like (KIRs) genomic regions have been suggested to influence malaria pathogenesis and infection susceptibility. We have examined KIR locus in relation to risk of infection and disease in Tea tribes (TT) of Austro Asiatic affinity and Tibeto-Burman (TB) populations from malaria endemic regions of Assam. Cons...

Post-malaria neurological syndrome is a rare complication of malaria. Typically, it occurs in case of severe malaria. Here we report a case in a Malagasy patient presenting a non-severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria complicated by post-malaria neurological syndrome. The management of such a syndrome is radically different from non-severe malaria. No specific treatment is needed.
