This study aimed at finding features of collocational deviations in the translations of Tuesdays with Mor- rie. In this direction, categories of collocations and collocational clashes, as well as causes of collocation- al clashes were explored. Collocation is an aspect of language generally considered arbitrary by nature and problematic to L2 learners who need collocational competence for effective communication. This study attempts, from the perspective of L2 learners, to have a deeper understanding of collocational use and some of the problems involved, by adopting a task based approach, using two highly comparable corpora based on ...

We introduce three reference data sets provided for the MWE 2008 evaluation campaign focused on ranking MWE candidates. The data sets comprise bigrams extracted from the Prague Dependency Treebank and the Czech National Corpus. The extracted bigrams are annotated as collocational and non-collocational and provided with corpus frequency information.

The overreliance on quantitative, numeric information and the underuse of qualitative, textual information is a common weakness in strategic management. This affects particularly the practice of competitive intelligence, which aims to provide actionable information about the company-external environment for decision making. Yet, forward-looking and insightful information about the environment o...

The theory of collocational networks adopts a textual definition of the phenomenon ofcollocation in an electronic corpus. The networks move out from a central node exploring thesignificant word associations of both base and collocate. This is done by measuring statisticalsignificance using mutual information. Working within a carefully-constructed corpus based on adiscourse comm...

The notion of expectancy grammar as a key to understanding the nature of psychologically real processes that underlie language use is introduced by Oller (1979). A central issue in this notion is that expectancy generating systems are constructed and modified in the course of language acquisition. Thus, one of the characteristics of language proficiency is that it consists of such an expectancy...

This paper investigates interactions between collocational properties and methods for organizing them into features for machine learning. In experiments performing an event categorization task, Wiebe et al. (1997a) found that different organizations are best for different properties. This paper presents a statistical analysis of the results across different machine learning algorithms. In the e...

Words are typically encountered in the context of a sentence. Recent studies suggest that the contexts in which a word typically appears can a!ect the way it is recognized in isolation. We distinguish two types of context: collocational, involving speci"c lexical items, and syntactic, involving abstract syntactic structures. We investigate the e!ects of syntactic context using the distribution ...
