Synovial chondromatosis of the wrist is rare. We report the case of a 35-year-old man with synovial chondromatosis of the left wrist with an 8-year follow-up. Frequent recurrences finally resulted in total wrist arthrodesis. A review of the literature produced 24 case reports of synovial chondromatosis of the wrist with only three cases showing recurrence.
Synovial chondromatosis (SC) is a rare, benign cartilaginous metaplasia that affects the joints, usually only one joint. Chondromatosis is a hard to diagnose disease because of its somewhat vague symptoms, especially those in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which does not fit those from the most prevalent disease sites (knee, elbow and shoulder). There is only one case of TMJ chondromatosis ...
Synovial chondromatosis is a generally monoarticular disorder characterized by multiple benign nodular cartilaginous formations, arising as result of metaplasia synovial tissue. Other names which this entity known are osteochondromatosis, primary chondromatosis, chondrometaplasia. The most frequent location the knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, wrist and temporomandibular joint. It can be or secondar...
Tenosynovial chondromatosis is an extra-articular version of articular synovial chondromatosis and a relatively rare condition that can affect the tendon sheath, bursa, or joint synovial tissue. Tenosynovial chondromatosis is rarely reported in the literature and is often misdiagnosed. In the present study, a case of extra-articular tenosynovial chondromatosis of the left ring finger in a 23-ye...
PURPOSE The progression of synovial chondromatosis to chondrosarcoma is very rare. Distinction between these two entities may be difficult on histology alone, and should be based on clinical, radiographic and microscopic evidence. Immunohistochemical markers that would facilitate differentiation between synovial chondromatosis and chondrosarcoma are currently being investigated. PATIENTS We d...
Primary synovial chondromatosis is a rare condition of idiopathic synovial chondrometaplasia and usually occurs during the third to fifth decades of life. Conversely, secondary synovial chondromatosis results from the growth of separated particles from articular cartilage or osteophytes in patients with joint diseases, such as degenerative osteoarthritis, and occurs mostly in elderly people. We...
Synovial chondromatosis is a rare, benign condition that usually affects the larger diarthroidal joints of the axial skeleton. Approximately 120 cases of synovial chondromatosis involving the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) have been reported. People with this condition may present with swelling, pain, intracapsular sounds and limitation of mandibular movement. Because it is important to differen...
Synovial chondromatosis is a rare benign lesion originating from the synovial membrane. It presents as adhesive or non-adhesive intra-articular cartilaginous loose bodies. Although the causes of synovial chondromatosis have not been fully elucidated, inflammation, external injury, or excessive use of joints have been suggested as possible causes. Synovial chondromatosis has been reported to occ...
A rare case of synovial chondromatosis with extension to the middle cranial fossa is reported. Synovial chondromatosis, a benign disorder characterized by multiple cartilaginous, free-floating nodules that originate from the synovial membrane is not exclusive to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This condition is commonly seen in the axial skeleton and can involve multiple joints. In this case...
Primary synovial chondromatosis is an uncommon, benign entity involving the synovial lining of larger joints. In this metaplastic process, islands of chondrocytes are clustered throughout the synovium, forming nodules that jut into the joint cavity. Clinical manifestations include pain, swelling, and decreased range of motion of associated extremities. Synovial chondromatosis may be confused wi...
