We report on the study of the eeect of the Tile calorimeter thickness in the ATLAS Barrel calorimeter performance. The reduction of the Tile Calorimeter depth by 20 cm would have severe consequences on the hadron calorimeter performance and would increase the punchtrough probability in the muon chambers placed behind the calorimeter. Cost savings are also analysed.

The FastCaloSim calorimeter simulation was developed to provide a reasonably accurate but still fast simulation of the ATLAS calorimeter system. Parameterizations of electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeter showers are used to deposit particle energies in the detailed calorimeter structure. In the present document a short overview of the fast calorimeter simulation principle is presented. This ...

The influence of radiation damage on energy resolution, linearity and uniformity of an electromagnetic lead/scintillator calorimeter was studied experimentally with 1–6GeV electrons. Plastic scintillators and wavelength shifter bars were irradiated uniformly with γ rays. Both were identical with those of the ZEUS uranium calorimeter. The attenuation length of the scintillators was determined fr...

ATLAS has chosen for its Hadronic End-Cap Calorimeter (HEC) the copper-liquid argon sampling technique with flat plate geometry and GaAs pre-amplifiers in the argon. The contruction of the calorimeter is now approaching completion. Results of production quality checks are reported and their anticipated impact on calorimeter performance discussed. Selected results, such as linearity, electron an...

Three large open pool fire experiments involving a calorimeter the size of a spent fuel rail cask were conducted at Sandia National Laboratories’ Lurance Canyon Burn Site. These experiments were performed to study the heat transfer between a very large fire and a large cask-like object. In all of the tests, the calorimeter was located above the center of a 7.93m diameter fuel pan, elevated 1m a...

Electromagnetic calorimeters with noble liquids and their limits in resolution are discussed. The origins of “initial” current measurement in calorimetry are retraced and the performance and first results of the NA48 calorimeter (quasi-homogeneous calorimeter with longitudinal electrode structure) are presented. Results of the prototype calorimeters of KEDR (quasi-homogeneous calorimeter with t...

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is being designed to explore particle physics at the TeV scale. The design of the Very Forward Region of the ILC detector is considered in the presented work. The Beam Calorimeter one of two electromagnetic calorimeters situated there is the subject of this thesis. The Beam Calorimeter has to provide a good hermeticity for high energy electrons, positrons...

The calorimetry subsystem of the CLEO-III Trigger incorporates both analog and digital electronics to provide pipelined trigger information every 42 ns with a latency of approximately 2.5 μs. This paper describes the pipelined signal-processing and pattern-recognition schemes used to provide calorimeter information to the experiment trigger, with somewhat greater emphasis on the analog componen...

The CDF experiment is successfully collecting data from pp̄ collisions at the Tevatron in Run II. As the data samples are getting larger, systematic uncertainties due to the measurement of the jet energy scale assessed using the calorimeter simulation have become increasingly important. In many years of operation, the collaboration has gained experience with GFLASH, a fast parametrization of ele...

A description is given of the UK primary standard graphite calorimeter system. The calorimeter measures absorbed dose to graphite for photon radiations from 60Co to 19 MV x-rays, and is the basis of the NPL therapy-level absorbed dose to water calibration service. Absorbed dose to graphite from the photon calorimeter has been compared with three other standards: an ionization chamber and cavity...
