This presentation provides a brief overview of the production and use of 1,3-butadiene in the United States. Starting as a coproduct of ethylene, the 1,3-butadiene monomer is extracted and purified, then transferred to consumers. Major uses of 1,3-butadiene include the manufacture of styrene-butadiene rubber, polybutadiene rubber, and adiponitrile.

1,3-Butadiene is a highly volatile gas that is used in the production of synthetic rubber; the major end use of the synthetic rubber is automobile tires. 1,3-Butadiene is also used for the production of high impact polystyrene and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resin plastics The predominant source of 1,3-butadiene in the atmosphere is industrial releases, which can occur during manufact...

In this paper the effect of a novel bifunctional additive [cyclic butylene terephthalate (CBT)] was investigated on the rheological, curing and mechanical properties of natural rubber (NR), styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), oil extended styrene butadiene rubber (oSBR), acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM). Results showed, that CBT acted as an effective l...

1,3-Butadiene, a major ingredient of synthetic rubber, has been shown to be carcinogenic in two animal species. To assess the possible human carcinogenicity of 1,3-butadiene, a critical review was undertaken of the epidemiologic literature. An early retrospective study of 8017 males employed in tire manufacturing found excess mortality for lymphatic and hematopoietic neoplasms in production wor...

coeffcient of  friction  (cof)  for  rubber parts  is one of  the key parameters in their interaction with solid rough surfaces (micrometer to millimeter scales),  such  as  tire-road  interactions. cof  of  rubber  depends  on  viscoelastic properties of rubber, roughness characteristics of the counter-part surface, and process variables such as contact nominal pressure and sliding speed. due ...

OBJECTIVES This study evaluated the mortality experience of workers from the styrene-butadiene rubber industry. Concerns about a possible association of 1,3-butadiene and styrene with lymphohaematopoietic, gastrointestinal, and lung cancers prompted the investigation. METHODS A retrospective follow up study was conducted of 15,649 men employed for at least one year at any of eight North Ameri...

Positive carcinogenicity studies in mice and rats have led to concerns that 1,3-butadiene may be carcinogenic in humans under exposure conditions that have existed in occupational settings and perhaps exist today. The principal settings of interest are the styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) manufacturing industry, which uses large quantities of 1,3-butadiene, and the 1,3-butadiene monomer industry....

1,3-Butadiene, a high-production volume chemical used largely in the manufacture of synthetic rubber, is a multiple organ carcinogen in rats and mice. In inhalation studies conducted in mice by the National Toxicology Program, high rates of early lethal lymphomas occurring at exposure levels of 625 ppm or higher reduced the development and expression of later developing tumors at other sites. U...

nanocomposite vulcunizates based on styrene-butadiene rubber (sbr), organoclay and a conventional sulfur curing system were prepared by melt blending process in an internal mixer. in order to study the effects of the type of interfacial compatibilizer on the properties of sbr and clay nanoparticles, three types of compatibilizers, maleic anhydride grafted ethylene-propylene diene rubber (epdm-g-...

The residual levels and migration behavior of volatile substances were detected using HS-GC/MS for acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS) toys, thermoplastic elastomer toys, and rubber toys made from 1,3-butadiene and styrene found on the Japanese market. The maximum residual level of these volatile substances was 2600 μg/g of styrene in ABS toys. In particular, the levels of known car...
