The edema bar is a new device that therapists can add to their repertoire of treatment approaches for burn patients. This article looks at the challenges therapists encounter while working with burn patients and describes the edema bar's design, its application to the burn rehabilitation process, and the multidisciplinary approach to its use.

In this study, we examined whether IL-18 plays a role in lung inflammation following alcohol (EtOH) and burn injury. Male rats ( approximately 250 g) were gavaged with EtOH to achieve a blood EtOH level of approximately 100 mg/dl before burn or sham injury ( approximately 12.5% total body surface area). Immediately after injury, rats were treated with vehicle, caspase-1 inhibitor AC-YVAD-CHO to...

We determined the effects of ibuprofen and methimazole on the formation of second- degree burn edema. Two small burns were produced on the back of rats. Ten minutes prior to burn, Evans blue ( EB) dye was injected through a femoral vein catheter. All animals were extravasation of evans blue. Ten groups of rats were studied. Immediately after induction of burns, test drugs were administered intr...

A body of data supports the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy in the treatment of thermal burns, but the role of HBO2 in the treatment of burn injury remains a subject of controversy. The aim of this study was to evaluate possible positive effects of HBO2 on the experimental burn wound healing. Deep second degree burns were produced on the depilated backs of 70 male Wistar rats using...

We conducted this study to evaluate a novel device to create a consistent and reproducible deep partial thickness burn in a porcine model. A thermostatically controlled, heated aluminium disc device was fashioned by the Biomedical Department of our institution. Contact burns were made on the flank of two Great White pigs by applying the device heated to 92°C at intervals of 5, 10, 15 and 20 sec...

OBJECTIVE To observe the effect of 4 and 40 microA direct current (DC) on edema formation after burn injury in rats. DESIGN, MATERIALS, AND METHODS Silver-nylon wound dressings were used as either anodes (-) or cathodes (+) on 20% total body surface area full-thickness scalds in anesthetized male Sprague-Dawley rats. Untreated burned rats and rats treated with silver-nylon dressings without c...

Care of burn-injured patients requires knowledge of the pathophysiologic changes affecting virtually all organs from the onset of injury until wounds are healed. Massive airway and/or lung edema can occur rapidly and unpredictably after burn and/or inhalation injury. Hemodynamics in the early phase of severe burn injury is characterized by a reduction in cardiac output and increased systemic an...

Background and Purpose: Çalmodulin is a calcium binding protein and Mediates many calcium-dependent processes in the cells. Çamodulin inhibitors have antipsychotic action, but, the extrabrain actions of these drugs is little known. Therefore, we evaluated the anti-inflammatory effects of three phenothiazine calmodulin inhibitors on carragrenin and burn induced inflammatory edema in the rat. T...

BACKGROUND Edema of tissue not directly injured by heat is a common complication after resuscitation of burn shock. Hypertonic 7.5% NaCl 6% dextran (HSD) infusion reduces early fluid requirements in burn shock, but the effects of HSD on peripheral and visceral tissue edema are not well-defined. METHODS We measured the microcirculatory absorptive pressures of burned and nonburned skin and tiss...
