Howard's semi-circle theorem is generalized for three-dimensional disturbances in a non-Boussinesq stratified fluid with a mean flow varying horizontally and vertically. In case of Boussinesq approximation Howard's and Rayleigh's theorem are extended for three-dimensional disturbances in a fluid with a mean flow varying only with respect to the latitude.

The system is called a Benjamin-Ono-Boussinesq system because it can be reduced to a pair of equations whose linearization uncouples to a pair of linear Benjamin-Ono equations. Equations of type (1.1) are a class of essential model equations appearing in physics and fluid mechanics. To describe two-dimensional irrotational flows of an inviscid liquid in a uniform rectangular channel, Boussinesq...

The Boussinesq equation is a mathematics model of thermohydraulics, which consists of equations of fluid and temperature in the Boussinesq approximation. The deterministic case has been studied systematically by many authors (e.g., see [1– 3]). However, in many practical circumstances, small irregularity has to be taken into account. Thus, it is necessary to add to the equation a random force, wh...

Consideration is given to the influence of an underwater landslide on waves at the surface of a shallow body of fluid. The equations of motion which govern the evolution of the barycenter of the landslide mass include various dissipative effects due to bottom friction, internal energy dissipation, and viscous drag. The surface waves are studied in the Boussinesq scaling, with time-dependent bat...

Abstract. We consider the convection problem of a fluid with viscosity depending on temperature in either a bounded or an exterior domain Ω⊂R ,N =2,3. It is assumed that the temperature is transported without thermal conductance (dissipation) by the velocity field which is described by the Navier-Stokes flow. This model is commonly called the Boussinesq system with partial viscosity. In this pa...

The simplifications required to apply the Boussinesq approximation to compressible flow are compared with those in an incompressible fluid. The larger degree of approximation required to describe mass conservation in a stratified compressible fluid with the Boussinesq continuity equation has led to the development of several different sets of “anelastic” equations that may be regarded as genera...

Depth-integrated long-wave models, such as the shallow-water and Boussinesq equations, are standard fare in the study of small amplitude surface waves in shallow water. While the shallow-water theory features conservation of mass, momentum and energy for smooth solutions, mechanical balance equations are not widely used in Boussinesq scaling, and it appears that the expressions for many of thes...

We study here some asymptotic models for the propagation of internal and surface waves in a two-fluid system. We focus on the so-called long wave regime for one-dimensional waves, and consider the case of a flat bottom. Following the method presented in [6] for the one-layer case, we introduce a new family of symmetric hyperbolic models, that are equivalent to the classical Boussinesq/Boussines...

We review recent computational results for hexagon patterns in nonBoussinesq convection. For sufficiently strong dependence of the fluid parameters on the temperature we find reentrance of steady hexagons, i.e. while near onset the hexagon patterns become unstable to rolls as usually, they become again stable in the strongly nonlinear regime. If the convection apparatus is rotated about a verti...

Boussinesq systems of nonlinear partial differential equations are fundamental equations in geophysical fluid dynamics. In this paper, we use asymmetric ideas and moving frames to solve the two-dimensional Boussinesq equations with partial viscosity terms studied by Chae (Adv. Math. 203 (2006), 497-513) and the three-dimensional stratified rotating Boussinesq equations studied by Hsia, Ma and W...
