Recent demonstrations of the removal and immobilization of inorganic contaminants by microbial transformations, sorption and mineralization show the potential of both natural and engineered microbes as bioremedial tools. Demonstrations of microbe-mediated mineral formation in biofilms implicate this mode of microbial life in geological evolution and remediation of inorganic contaminants.
In this review, we highlight beneficial use of microbial biofilms in remediation of environmental pollutants by bioremediation. Bioremediation is an environment friendly, cost effective, sustainable technology that utilizes microbes to decontaminate and degrade a wide variety of pollutants into less harmful products. Relative to free-floating planktonic cells, microbes existing in biofilm mode ...

Microplastics (MPs, 1 µm – 5 mm) in aquatic environments undergo complex weathering transformations such as those induced by microbial colonization and biofilm formation, that affect their ability to interact with environmental contaminants (co-contaminants). In this study, the composition of MP biofilms its influence on sorption bioavailability two co-contaminants different physicochemistry, b...
Plastics, especially microplastics (<5 mm in length), are anthropogenic polymer particles that have been detected almost all environments. Microplastics extremely persistent pollutants and act as long-lasting reactive surfaces for additives, organic matter, toxic substances. Biofilms microbial assemblages a sink particulate including microplastics. They ubiquitous freshwater ecosystems provide ...
background chlorhexidine gluconate (chx) is the most common antimicrobial agent used against oral pathogens, however information on its ability to inhibit and disrupt anaerobic single and multispecies biofilms is relatively unknown. objectives the purpose of this study was to test the efficacy of chx for its biofilm inhibition and disruption properties using crystal violet assay. materials and ...
A mathematical model for emerging contaminants sorption in multispecies biofilms, based on a continuum approach and mass conservation principles is presented. Diffusion of contaminants within the biofilm is described using a diffusion-reaction equation. Binding sites formation and occupation are modeled by two systems of hyperbolic partial differential equations are mutually connected through t...
Antibiotics are emerging contaminants, which wing to their bioactivity, may lead to short-term and long-term alterations of natural microbial communities in aquatic environment. We investigated the effects of antibiotics on biofilm bacterial communities in the Llobregat River (Northeast Spain). Three sampling sites were selected: two less polluted sites and one hotspot. River water was collecte...
Microorganisms naturally form biofilms on solid surfaces for their mutual benefits including protection from environmental stresses caused by contaminants, nutritional depletion or imbalances. The biofilms are normally dangerous to human health due to their inherited robustness. On the other hand, a recent study suggested that electrochemically active biofilms (EABs) generated by electrically a...
