Anaerobic cometabolic conversion of benzothiophene was studied with a sulfate-reducing enrichment culture growing with naphthalene as the sole source of carbon and energy. The sulfate-reducing bacteria were not able to grow with benzothiophene as the primary substrate. Metabolite analysis was performed with culture supernatants obtained by cometabolization experiments and revealed the formation...

A culture enriched by growth on 1-methylnaphthalene was used to study the aerobic biotransformations of benzothiophene and 3-methylbenzothiophene. Neither of the sulfur heterocyclic compounds would support growth, but they were transformed by the culture growing on 1-methylnaphthalene or glucose or peptone. Cometabolism of benzothiophene yielded benzothiophene-2,3-dione, whereas that of 3-methy...

Raloxifene and arzoxifene are benzothiophene selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) of clinical use in postmenopausal osteoporosis and treatment of breast cancer and potentially in hormone replacement therapy. The benefits of arzoxifene are attributed to improved bioavailability over raloxifene, whereas the arzoxifene metabolite, desmethylarzoxifene (DMA) is a more potent antiestrogen. ...

The effects of temperature and composition on the density and viscosity of pure benzothiophene and ionic liquid (IL), and those of the binary mixtures containing the IL 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidynium tricyanomethanide ([BMPYR][TCM] + benzothiophene), are reported at six temperatures (308.15, 318.15, 328.15, 338.15, 348.15 and 358.15) K and ambient pressure. The temperature dependences of the den...

Dibenzothiophene is degraded to 3-hydroxy-2-formyl benzothiophene by various bacteria, including a strain of Pseudomonas putida that also forms dibenzothiophene sulfone via an alternate pathway. By using these end products as substrates, mixed enrichment cultures that could degrade 3-hydroxy-2-formyl benzothiophene and dibenzothiophene sulfone with the formation of CO2 were established.

Gordona terrae strain C-6 was isolated from oil-contaminated soil and is capable of desulfurizing benzothiophene (BT). Here we report the draft genome sequence of G. terrae strain C-6, which may help to reveal the genetic basis of the BT biodesulfurization pathway.

N-(9-Oxothioxanthenyl)benzothiophene carboxamides bearing leaving groups (LG(-) = Cl(-), PhS(-), HS(-), PhCH(2)S(-)) at the C-3 position of the benzothiophene ring system photochemically cyclize with nearly quantitative release of the leaving group, LG(-). The LG(-) photoexpulsions can be conducted with 390 nm light or with a sunlamp. Solubility in 75% aqueous CH(3)CN is achieved by introducing...

Emergence of new infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, bacterial and fungal diseases have stimulated public interest and inspired commitments by medicinal chemists to control these diseases. Increasing microbial resistance has become a very serious clinical problem for many classes of antibiotics. Therefore, it is an urgent requirement to design and synthesize novel antimicrobial agents to ...

Photolysis of S,C-sulfonium ylides derived from thioanisol, thiophene, benzothiophene, or dibenzothiophene provides products deriving from dicarbomethoxycarbene. In methanol, no rearrangement of the carbene to the ketene derivative is observed. Formation of dibenzothiophene and benzothiophene is quantitative. For the thiophene-based ylide, insertion of the carbene into the alpha-CH bond of thio...
