In this paper, a shock model for the effect of stress in terms of cortisol is studied. Assume that shocks arrive according to a Poisson process. Shocks are events which cause perturbation to the system, leading to its deterioration and consequent failure. The Cartisol Awakening Responds (CAR) at pre partum and post partum are compared by this model.

The effects of night-time exposure to traffic noise (TN) or low frequency noise (LFN) on the cortisol awakening response and subjective sleep quality were determined. Twelve male subjects slept for five consecutive nights in a noise-sleep laboratory. After one night of acclimatisation and one reference night, subjects were exposed to either TN (35dB L(Aeq), 50dB L(Amax)) or LFN (40dB L(Aeq)) on...

Self-awakening, waking up at a designated time decided before sleeping, could prevent failure in the blood circulation vessel system such as heart attack, acute increases in heart rate or blood pressure upon waking. Previous research showed that anticipatory changes occurred in heart rate prior to awakening from a short nap by means of self-awakening for young participants. However, the effects...

The current study focuses on autonomic nervous system activity during sleep as a physiological aspect of sleep quality, and investigated the associations between the cortisol awakening response (CAR) and autonomic activity during sleep and after awakening. Ambulatory electrocardiograms were obtained from 20 participants, who also provided saliva samples (at the time of awakening, and 30, 45, an...

PURPOSE Our main aim was to determine the time interval between the seizure onsets and arousal-awakening related to these seizures in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and to discuss the role of lateralization on arousal-awakening mechanisms. METHODS Thirty-three TLE patients who underwent video-EEG monitoring with simultaneous polysomnography (PSG) and had recorded nocturnal seizure...

Recent evidence suggested that the free cortisol response to awakening is influenced by awakening time in healthy younger adults (Edwards et al., 2001). In order to investigate this association further, 179 community-dwelling subjects of a large age range (4-75 yrs) participated in the present study. The sample consisted of 99 women, 67 men and 13 children. Subjects were instructed to obtain sa...

OBJECTIVE Impact of the decrease of regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) on postoperative delayed awakening after total aortic arch replacement (TAR) was validated. METHODS From 2008 to 2013, 143 consecutive patients underwent TAR using selective antegrade cerebral perfusion. rSO2 was monitored using near-infrared spectroscopy. We calculated a percent decrease of rSO2 (%-D) immediately ...

Self-awakening is the ability to awaken without external assistance at a predetermined time. Cross-sectional studies reported that people who self-awaken have sleep/wake habits different from those of people who use external means to wake from sleep. However, no longitudinal study has examined self-awakening. The present study investigated self- awakening, both habitual and inconsistent, compar...
