background and objectives: diagnosis of avian tuberculosis by conventional culture method is still considered as the “gold standard” technique. the main objective of this study was to compare growth of mycobacterium avium subsp. avium on four specific mycobacterial cultures such as glycerinated lowenstein-jensen medium, pyruvate-enriched lowenstein- jensen medium, mycobactin j-supplemented herr...

Commercially available kits (Mycobacterium avium Complex Rapid Diagnostic System and Mycobacterium tuberculosis Complex Rapid Diagnostic System; Gen-Probe, Inc., San Diego, Calif.) utilizing nucleic acid hybridization for the rapid identification of members of the M. avium-M. intracellulare complex and M. tuberculosis complex were evaluated by using 339 clinical and American Type Culture Collec...

Risk of Mycobacterium avium complex disease was examined in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients with and without a history of tuberculosis. Information was obtained by retrospective review of charts of patients in HIV clinics in 10 US cities. Among 1363 patients with <200 CD4 cells/mm3 seen at Grady Memorial Hospital (GMH), 11 (17%) of 66 with a history of a positive purified p...

A lthough distinct, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium both infect and survive in host macrophages. M. tuberculosis is more virulent, specifically adapted to humans, and grows poorly outside of the host. In contrast, M. avium can survive in the environment and also can infect several different host species in addition to humans, including birds, pigs, dogs, and monkeys. M. tuber...

Significant resistance against influenza virus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections was induced when trehalose dimycolate from M. tuberculosis or M. bovis but not M. avium was combined with muramyl dipeptide. Trehalose dimycolate from M. tuberculosis, in contrast to that from M. avium, could confer resistance against Toxoplasma gondii infections.

Differentiation between Mycobacterium tuberculosis and M. avium is helpful for the treatment of disseminated mycobacterial infection in AIDS patients. This can traditionally be done by time-consuming biochemical tests or with Accuprobe. Previously, PCR restriction enzyme analysis (PCR-REA) of the 16S-23S rRNA gene spacer was shown to be able to identify a limited number of strains of Mycobacter...

Antigens in a 4-week-old culture filtrate (CF) of Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium were separated in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and identified by Western blotting. The culture had minimal lysis of bacilli, giving a CF preparation consisting mainly of secreted proteins. Comparison with a similar CF of Mycobacterium tuberculosis with almost no contamination with int...

A case of Mycobacterium avium arthritis in a 39-year-old female patient with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) was reported. An extra-articular abscess had formed outside the knee joint and extended down the calf. A culture was taken of the abscess and synovial fluid disclosed Mycobacterium avium. This was resistant to most anti-tuberculosis agents. A combination of anti-tuberculosis drugs...

background and objectives: avian tuberculosis is one of the most important infections affecting most species of birds. mycobacterium avium can not only infect all species of birds, but also infect some domesticated mammals.the most crucial aspect of control and eradication scheme is identification of infection sources and transmission routs. mo- lecular techniques such as restriction fragment l...

the aim of this study was to investigate the histopathology of avian tuberculosis in naturally infected domestic pigeons (columba livia var. domestica) with mycobacterium aviumsubsp.avium. avian tuberculosis is one of the most important diseases that affect all species of birds, and is most often caused by mycobacterium avium and mycobacterium genavense. eighty out of more than 600 pigeons were...
