there is limited data in the literature on the normal size of the anterior fontanelle. this cross- sectional study was to determine normal values of anterior fontanelle size on the first day of life, using standard methods. anterior fontanelle size was measured in 400 term and healthy neonates delivered at the shariati hospital, tehran, iran. examination included assessment of head circumferenc...
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the use of the posterior fontanelle in premature neonates (< 37 weeks) with a birth weight < 1,500 g in the ultrasound diagnosis of intraventricular/periventricular hemorrhage and to assess whether the use of the anterior fontanelle associated with the posterior fontanelle changes the interrater agreement. METHODS Eighty-five premature neonates were evaluated in this pro...
INTRODUCTION Assessing the anterior fontanelle size is an important component of routine neonatal examination. For meaningful interpretation of fontanelle size, normal reference values are essential. Normal values for the fontanelle size in Sri Lankan newborns are not available. OBJECTIVES To investigate characteristics of anterior fontanelle size at birth in Sri Lankan babies. METHODS A de...
We report the plain film and sonographic findings in six children (2 1/2 months to 5 years old) with a subgaleal dermoid cyst at the anterior fontanelle. Plain films of the skull made in all patients showed a soft-tissue mass superficial to the anterior fontanelle with a normal subcutaneous fat layer above it. In three children, the margins of the anterior fontanelle were beveled to match the c...
Four cases of congenital inclusion dermoid cysts located over the anterior fontanelle occurred in male Turkish children aged 6 months to 5 years. These rare cysts presented as slow-growing soft masses over the anterior fontanelle. The cysts were totally removed without recurrence. Dermoid cysts can be easily cured because of the absence of intracranial extension.
Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a rare autosomal dominant skeletal disease. CCD is caused by mutation in the gene on 6p21 encoding transcription factor CBFA1, i.e. runt-related transcription factor 2(RUNX2). The disease is characterized by a persistently open anterior fontanelle and skull sutures, hypoplastic or aplastic clavicles, dental abnormalities, short stature, a wide pubic symphysis, a...
Early observers (Elsasser, 1843; Friedleben, 1860; Roger, 1859) have claimed that the dimensions of the anterior fontanelle of the human skull increase from the time of birth until about the age of 9 months, and that it is, as a rule, closed at the age of 18 months. Scammon (1923), reviewing this literature, challenged these observations on the grounds that the material studied involved Europea...
Tracheal intubation is frequently required in neonatal anaesthetic practice. Awake intubation is one method of securing the airway and in certain circumstances, for many anaesthetists, can be preferable to intubation following induction of anaesthesia. Previous studies have inferred that the elevation in anterior fontanelle pressure observed during tracheal intubation in neonates was caused by ...
Dermoid cysts are developmental tumours that develop from germ cells displaced between the 3rd and 5th week of embryogenesis. Although dermoid cysts are known to be the most common scalp swellings; cystic congenital inclusion dermoid of the anterior fontanelle is a very rare scalp swelling. It is a benign, slow-growing, non-tender, soft swelling which is covered with intact skin. Ruling out int...
