There have been several indications (1, 2) that the amylase found in serum is derived from sources other than the pancreas or salivary glands. For this reason we wished to determine whether any indication of fractionation of serum amylase could be obtained by paper electrophoresis. Although several accounts of the fractionation of amylase in serum are found in the literature, some involving pre...

Amylases from incubated aleurone layers or from starchy endosperm of barley seeds (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Himalaya) were investigated using acrylamide gel electrophoresis and analytical gel filtration with Sephadex G-200. Electrophoresis of amylase from aleurone layers yields seven visually distinct isozymes with an estimated molecular weight of 43,000. Because each isozyme hydrolyzes beta-limi...

The aim of this study was production and partial purification of α-amylase enzyme by Bacillus licheniformis. B. Licheniformis was allowed to grow in broth culture for purpose of inducing α-amylase enzyme. Optimal conditions for amylase production by B. Licheniformis are incubation period of 120 h, temperature of 37 °C and pH 7.0. The α-amylase enzyme was purified by ion exchange chromatography ...

We report the presence of an extremely high proportion of "aged" amylase in the serum and cyst fluid of a patient with a pancreatic pseudocyst. A salivary amylase inhibitor test helped us to differentiate these "aged" pancreatic amylases from salivary fractions having a similar electrophoretic mobility.

a-Amylase was purified to apparent homogeneity from normal pancreas and a transplantable pancreatic acinar carcinoma of the rat by affinity chromatography on a-glucohydrolase inhibitor (a-GHI) bound to aminohexyl-Sepharose 4B. Recovery was 95-100% for both pancreas and tumour a-amylases. They were monomeric proteins, with Mr approx. 54000 on SDS/polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis. Isoelectric f...
