Acrylates andmethacrylates are the salts, esters and conjugate bases of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, respectively. They are well known to cause allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) (1). Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) resulting from the use of (meth)acrylates has been widely reported in beauticians and ‘nail artists’. According to The Health and Occupation Research database, the freque...

Occupational and non-occupational contact allergy to, and allergic contact dermatitis caused by, acrylates/methacrylates are frequently reported (1–18). However, there is no acrylate/methacrylate test preparation in the European baseline patch test series (19). Therefore, contact allergy to, and allergic contact dermatitis caused by, acrylates/methacrylates may be overlooked when the decision i...

ACRYLATES HAVE been around since the 1930s, when Rohm and Haas began mass production of Plexiglas, a clear and resistant glass substitute made of polymerized methacrylate. It is used extensively for windowpanes, airplane canopies, car lights and windshields, streetlamps, and so on. Numerous other acrylates have been synthesized and have found applications in paints and adhesives, dental composi...

We report a case of a non-atopic, 37-year-old nail technician who developed blisters, itching, scaling, and redness, that is, allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), on the hands and fingers owing to sensitization tomethacrylates and acrylates, in this article called (meth)acrylates, only months after finishing her trainee period. The protective effect of gloves was studied in an in vivo system simu...

A case of disseminated allergic contact dermatitis in a screen process printer is presented. The skin lesions were caused by multifunctional acrylates (methylpropane triacrylate and pentaerythritol triacrylate--highly positive patch tests (+ + +) after 48 and 96 h) present in ultraviolet cured transparent lacquer used in coat printed posters to make them weather-resistant. Patch tests with lacq...

The NMR chemical shift, i.e., the π-electron density of the double bond, of acrylates and methacrylates is related to the reactivity of their monomers. We investigated quantitative structure-property relationships (QSPRs) between the base-catalyzed hydrolysis rate constants (k1) or the rate constant with glutathione (GSH) (log k(GSH)) for acrylates and methacrylates and the (13)C NMR chemical s...

We investigated the quantitative structure-activity relationships between hemolytic activity (log 1/H(50)) or in vivo mouse intraperitoneal (ip) LD(50) using reported data for α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds such as (meth)acrylate monomers and their (13)C-NMR β-carbon chemical shift (δ). The log 1/H(50) value for methacrylates was linearly correlated with the δC(β) value. That for (meth)acry...

Until now, acrylates have been the monomers of choice for use for step and flash imprint lithography ~SFIL! etch barrier formulations, in part because of the commercial availability of silicon-containing acrylates ~necessary for etch resistance!, together with their low viscosities and capability for rapid photopolymerization. However, despite many desirable properties, the polymerization of ac...

BACKGROUND Allergic contact dermatitis due to acrylates present in the workplace is a disease frequently reported among dentists, printers, and fiberglass workers. Recently, the number of cases of contact allergic dermatitis among beauticians specialized in sculpting artificial nails has increased. OBJECTIVE Our objective was to study the clinical characteristics and allergens implicated in a...

A palladium(II)-catalyzed direct alkenylation reaction of dihydropyranones was developed. Various substituted dihydropyranones could afford the desired products in reasonable yields. And different acrylates were found to be good coupling partners in this coupling reaction. A Pd(0)/Pd(II) catalytic pathway was proposed to be involved in this coupling reaction.
