The effectiveness of 13 N-acetylneuraminic acid derivatives as potential inducers of Arthrobacter sialophilus neuraminidase were examined. N-Acetylneuraminic acid nitrogen and thioglycosides were not inducers, whereas 2,3-dehydro-N-acetylneuraminic acid, a transition state analog for neuraminidases, was the most effective inductive ligand. The C-4 hydroxyl function of N-acetylneuraminic acid wa...

In the accompanying paper (2) it was shown that Neisseria meningitidis, strain 1908 (Group C), forms N-acetylneuraminic acid by the condensation of N-acetyl-n-mannosamine and phosphoenolpyruvate with elimination of the phosphate group. In a preliminary communication we have reported a neK type of reaction carried out by another enzyme of Ncisserio meningitidis, strain 1998, which might be consi...
Previous studies have reported that plants contain negligible amounts of free or protein-bound N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac). This is a major disadvantage for the use of plants as a biopharmaceutical expression system, since N-glycans with terminal Neu5Ac residues are important for the biological activities and half-lives of recombinant therapeutic glycoproteins in humans. For the synthesis ...
background: the gold standard for detection of bladder cancer is cystoscopy, which is an invasive and complicated procedure. our study was conducted to find a tumor marker with high specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy for the diagnosis of bladder cancer. methods: serum samples were collected from 58 bladder cancer patients and 60 healthy control subjects. levels of lipid-bound sialic acid (l...
The nanATEK-yhcH, yjhATS, and yjhBC operons in Escherichia coli are coregulated by environmental N-acetylneuraminic acid, the most prevalent sialic acid in nature. Here we show that YjhS (NanS) is a probable 9-O-acetyl N-acetylneuraminic acid esterase required for E. coli to grow on this alternative sialic acid, which is commonly found in mammalian host mucosal sites.
N-Acetylneuraminic acid is transformed into its until now unavailable and rather unwieldy 1,7-lactone, via the manageable 2-benzyloxycarbonyl N-acetylneuraminic acid 1,7-lactone which generates the free lactone in quantitative yield by hydrogenolysis.
A new ganglioside, containing an alkali-labile linkage, was extracted from mouse brain and purified. It represents 3.6% of total lipid-bound sialic acid in the tissue and was obtained in pure form with a yield of about 35%. It contains sphingosine, glucose, galactose, N-acetylgalactosamine and sialic acid in the molar ratio 1:1:2:1:4 and, upon exhaustive sialidase treatment gives the monosialog...
X-ray crystal structures have been determined for several complexes between influenza virus hemagglutinin and derivatives of its cell-surface receptor, sialic acid (Neu5Ac). Difference electron density maps establish the existence of a second binding site in addition to the primary site characterized previously. Three compounds bind to both sites: Neu5Ac(alpha 2-3)Gal(beta 1-4)Glc [(alpha 2-3)s...
