Increased duration of fixed orthodontic treatments leads to increased tooth root degeneration, gum inflammation and tooth caries. To decrease the time period of orthodontic treatment, it is essential to facilitate tooth movement or in other words increase the speed of bone remodeling. Use of low level laser therapy is a method for achieving this goal.

In this study we examined anteroposterior cephalometric changes in children enrolled in a randomized controlled trial of early treatment for Class II malocclusion. Children, aged 9.6 +/- 0.8 years at the start of study, were randomly assigned to control (n = 81), bionator (n = 78), and headgear/biteplane (n = 90) treatments. Cephalograms were obtained initially, after Class I molars were obtain...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of digital tooth preparation imaging and evaluation technology on dental students' technical abilities, self-evaluation skills, and the assessment of their simulated clinical work. A total of 80 second-year students at one U.S. dental school were assigned to one of three groups: control (n=40), E4D Compare (n=20), and Sirona prepCheck (n=20). Stu...

o bjectives: one major drawback of orthodontic treatment is its long duration due to slow tooth movement and the pain at the onset of treatment following application of forces. there is controversy regarding the efficacy of laser for decreasing the treatment time and pain of orthodontic treatment. the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of low level diode laser on the rate of or...

This review describes the mechanical and biological signalling pathways during orthodontic tooth movement and provides an update of the current literature. A theoretical model is introduced to elucidate the complex cascade of events after the application of an orthodontic force to a tooth. In this model, the events are divided into four stages: matrix strain and fluid flow, cell strain, cell ac...

Cases in which teeth have only the cervical third remaining from orthodontically induced external root resorption, cast the following doubts: 1) What care should be taken to keep these teeth in mouth with the least risk possible? 2) What care should be taken with regards to reading of imaging exams, particularly in terms of accurately determining cervical root and bone loss? 3) Why is not endod...

Twenty-one normal subjects, 32 bilateral parkinsonian patients (BPs) and 29 hemiparkinsonian patients (HP) were submitted to separate or sequentially associated motor tasks that included simple reaction times (RT), choice RTs, directional RTs, and movement RTs. The results showed that simple RTs, directional RTs, and movement times (MT) were slower in BPs as compared to normal subjects; for cho...

OBJECTIVE To elucidate some of the parameters determining the frictional behavior of passive, active, and interactive self-ligating brackets during sliding mechanics. MATERIALS AND METHODS A custom jig mimicking the three-dimensional tooth movements that occur during sliding mechanics and an Instron testing machine were used to determine the resistance to sliding of six different self-ligatin...
