We present a case of primary disseminated herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) cutaneous disease in a 22-year-old male. We discuss the immune response to HSV-2 infection as well as the extragenital manifestations of HSV-2 observed in immune-competent and immune-suppressed persons.

Human brain cells were examined for the presence of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) DNA sequences by in situ hybridisation. Viral genome was detected in immunosuppressed patients with virological evidence of past HSV infection but not in immunosuppressed patients with no such evidence. The use of low-level laser to suppress infections caused by Herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2 was evaluated after one to five applications. A gradual reduction in replication of Herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2 was observed, with 68.4% and 57.3% inhibition, respectively, after five applications, thus favoring its clinical use.

Shell vial (SV) cultures for herpes simplex virus using primary rabbit kidney cells stained at 8 h after inoculation were compared with 20-h SV cultures as well as conventional tissue culture. Of the 326 clinical specimens examined, conventional culture detected 67, and of these, 61 (91%) and 42 (63%) were detected by 20-h SV cultures and 8-h SV cultures, respectively.
