Exploring the potential catalytic applications of boron-doped carbon materials is a fascinating challenge. Here we describe that boron-doped onion-like carbon and carbon nanotubes as metal-free catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic activity and stability in nitroarene reduction under a stoichiometric amount of reductant.

We studied synthesis of Ni or Fe nanoparticle-loaded multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by pyrolyzing metal organic salts with CaH2, a very strong reductant. The use of CaH2 lowered the formation temperature of MWCNTs down to 400 °C without the use of toxic halogen-containing precursors and assistance of plasma.
This paper highlights Ni-catalyzed allylation of electron-rich aryl bromides with a variety of substituted allylic carbonates using zinc as the terminal reductant, affording E-alkenes regioselectively in good to excellent yields by the addition of aryl to the less hindered allylic carbon.
