In a first step, definitions of the irreducible information structural categories are given, and in a second step, it is shown that there are no invariant phonological or otherwise grammatical correlates of these categories. In other words, the phonology, syntax or morphology are unable to define information structure. It is a common mistake that information structural categories are expressed ...

To bridge the gap between the dissimilar mechanisms and entities of the phonological grammar and those of the phonetic mechanisms for producing and perceiving speech, the ‘phonetics-phonology interface’ (PPI) has been invoked. In this brief presentation, an introduction to the ICPhS 2003 Symposium on The Phonetics-Phonology Interface, I present an exegesis and taxonomy of the PPI and some citat...

An essential question for many theories of grammar is how the phonological properties of a complex form relate to the phonological representations of its constituent parts. A working hypothesis (with an analogue on the semantic side) is that the phonological form of a complex expression is affected not only by the phonology of its individual parts, but also by the way in which the complex form ...

Abstract: This research has been carried out in the framework of Auto segmental-metrical (AM) phonology to study the stress in Persian. Two types of abstract and concrete prominences were distinguished in which the first one refers to the stress and the second one refers to the pitch accent. Stress is assumed to be a lexical property of the lexemes, but pitch accent is assumed to be an intonati...
