A VIM metallo-beta-lactamase-producing Aeromonas hydrophila strain carrying an integron-borne bla(VIM-4) gene was isolated from a cirrhotic patient's fecal sample in a Budapest hospital. The variable region of this integron is identical with that of a previously characterized integron from Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates in Pécs in southern Hungary.

Rates of metallo-beta-lactamase and 16S rRNA methylase production were investigated in 51 imipenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates collected from hospitals in São Paulo, Brazil. Of them, 57% and 75% produced SPM-1 and RmtD, respectively. Of note, 51% produced both enzymes, suggesting that their coproduction is already common in this geographic area.

In 2004 and 2005, 5 metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL)-positive Acinetobacter baumannii isolates were found in 2 Greek hospitals. Isolates were unrelated and carried blaVIM-1 in a class 1 integron; bla(OXA-51-) and bla(OXA-58-like) carbapenemase genes were also detected. VIM-1 MBL in Acinetobacter spp. causes concern, given the increasing resistance of this species.

The penamaldic derivatives of amoxicillin, ampicillin, and penicillins G and V, stabilized with Zn(2+), were obtained from a methanolic medium. The enzymatic kinetic results show that the these derivatives elicit reversible inhibition of the enzyme metallo-beta-lactamase from Bacillus cereus, with inhibition constant values determined at pH 7.0 and 25 degrees C.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates from an outbreak in Canada were highly resistant to carbapenems and ceftazidime but not piperacillin. They produced a novel integron-associated metallo-beta-lactamase, designated IMP-7, with 91% identity to IMP-1. bla(IMP-7) was not detected with standard bla(IMP)-specific primers, owing to mismatches in the forward primer.

This report describes the detection of Citrobacter koseri carrying K. pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC-2) isolated in July 2011 from a Greek patient, who was also colonised by a Klebsiella pneumoniae strain coproducing KPC-2 and Verona integron-encoded metallo-beta-lactamase (VIM)-1.

The first integron-borne metallo-beta-lactamase gene was isolated in Hungary. The bla(VIM-4) gene is located on a class 1 integron that also carries a novel bla(OXA)-like gene. The integron is harbored by a serotype O12 Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain and shows high structural similarity to integrons isolated in Greece and Poland.

We present an imipenem lysate metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL) functional assay. This assay eliminates false-positive results due to the bactericidal effects of EDTA, can be performed with inexpensive reagents available in most laboratories, and is as accurate as the MBL Etest. It is appropriate for both high-accuracy screens and laboratories in developing countries with limited resources.

VIM metallo-beta-lactamase-producing serotype O11 or O12 Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates infecting or colonizing 19 patients from seven hospitals in Hungary were characterized between October 2003 and November 2005. Macrorestriction analysis revealed the involvement of hospitals from three different towns in northwest Hungary in an outbreak caused by VIM-4-producing P. aeruginosa.

Serratia marcescens strain AH0650_Sm1 is a clinical multidrug-resistant isolate from Australia. Here, we report its annotated draft genome comprising 20 contigs. We identified chromosomal antimicrobial resistance genes including a tet(41) variant, an aac(6')-Ic variant, ampC, a metallo-beta-lactamase, and several putative multidrug efflux pumps, as well as a novel prophage.
