Metal-enhanced luminescence of lanthanide complexes by noble metal nanoparticles has attracted much attention because of its high efficiency in improving the luminescent properties of lanthanide ions. Herein, nine kinds of europium and terbium complexes-RE(TPTZ)(ampca)₃·3H₂O, RE(TPTZ)(BA)₃·3H₂O, RE(phen)(ampca)₃·3H₂O, RE(phen)(PTA)1.5·3H₂O (RE = Eu, Tb) and Eu(phen)(BA)₃·3H₂O (TPTZ = 2,4,6-tri(...

Alpha- and flaviviruses contain class II fusion proteins, which form ion-permeable pores in the target membrane during virus entry. The pores generated during entry of the alphavirus Semliki Forest virus have been shown previously to be blocked by lanthanide ions. Here, analyses of the influence of rare earth ions on the entry of the flaviviruses West Nile virus and Uganda S virus revealed an u...

A recent surprising discovery of the activity of rare earth metals (lanthanides) as enzyme cofactors as well as transcriptional regulators has overturned the traditional assumption of biological inertia of these metals. However, so far, examples of such activities have been limited to alcohol dehydrogenases. Here we describe the physiological effects of a mutation in xoxG, a gene encoding a nov...

Treatment of growing Escherichia coli B with lanthanide ions [lanthanum(III), terbium(III), and europium(III)] and subsequent aldehyde-OsO4 fixation caused areas of high contrast to appear within the periplasm (the space between inner and outer membrane of the cell envelope). X-ray microanalysis of ultrathin sections of Epon-embedded or acrylic resin-embedded cells revealed the presence of the ...

The VCD spectra of lanthanide chelates with two chiral ligands display conserved sequences of bands throughout the Ln series. Some compounds (Tm, Yb) feature increased bands and strongly improved signal-to-noise ratios, an effect we dub Lanthanide Induced VCD Enhancement (LIVE).

This paper reviews the current array of complexes of relevance to achieving lanthanide mediated nitrogen fixation. A brief history of nitrogen fixation is described, including a limited discussion of successful transition metal facilitated nitrogen fixation systems. A detailed discussion of the numerous lanthanide-nitrogen species relevant to nitrogen fixation are discussed and are related to t...

Lanthanide ions, mainly eu rop ium and te rb ium ions, are used as luminescent probes in structural investigations of biological systems [ 1 4 ] . Less numerous, however, are studies concerning chemiluminescence (CL) involving lanthanide ions [5 — 8] and connected with biological molecules [9, 10]. In this paper investigations on a chemiluminescent system containing E u : + ions and H2O2 are pr...

Lithium-lanthanide-2-naphthoxide complexes are found to have solvent dependent solution structures and related monomeric/dimeric solid state structures. The incorporation of tetramethylguanidium cations into lanthanide 2-naphthoxide complexes stabilizes a complex structure both in solution and the solid state through bridging hydrogen bonds between the 2-naphthoxide ligands.

A novel [2]pseudorotaxane was successfully constructed by the complexation of dibenzo[24]-crown-8 (DB24C8) derivative bearing terpyridine moiety (1) with lanthanide ion (Tb(3+)) and fullerene-containing ammonium salt (2), exhibiting the controlled photophysical behaviors as a reversible luminescent lanthanide switch in the presence of K(+) or 18-crown-6 (18C6).

The first anion-templated synthesis of a lanthanide-containing interlocked molecule is demonstrated by utilizing a nitrite anion to template initial pseudorotaxane formation. Subsequent stoppering of the interpenetrated assembly allows for the preparation of a lanthanide-functionalized [2]rotaxane in high yield. Following removal of the nitrite anion template, the europium [2]rotaxane host is d...
