The specimens of 115 patients (serum and stool) with clinical symptoms of botulism, who were inpatient and outpatient were collected at some medical centers in Tehran and other areas of Iran, between April 1984 to August 1994. In this survey, specimens of 73 patients showed the toxin and spore of C.botulinum. Clo...
background botulism is a toxin-induced paralytic illness characterized by cranial nerve palsies and descending flaccid paralysis. botulinum toxin is regarded as the most lethal ever-known substance. the diagnosis in sporadic cases and even in small outbreaks is the main physicians’ challenge. the aim of this study was to assess clinical presentations of 80 cases of botulism referred to loghman ...
The authors reply: We appreciate the additional points raised by Rao et al. and would underscore the importance of early initiation of antitoxin treatment in cases of suspected botulism. A retrospective analysis of 132 cases of foodborne botulism reported to the CDC from 1973 through 1980 showed a median hospital stay of 10 days if patients received antitoxin within 24 hours after symptoms bega...
Botulism caused by neurotoxins of Clostridium (C.) botulinum is a rare, but serious life-threatening disease in humans and animals. Botulism in livestock is usually caused by the oral uptake of C. botulinum neurotoxins (BoNT) via contaminated feed and is characterized by flaccid paralysis. In the recent past a new syndrome caused by BoNT in dairy cattle was postulated. It was supposed that C. b...
All reported cases of infant botulism except one have been caused by proteolytic strains (group I) of Clostridium botulinum, toxin types A or B. We describe the cultural and biochemical characteristics of the causative organism of this singular case of infant botulism, caused by type F botulinal toxin. Although this organism produces type F botulinal toxin, it is quite different from proteolyti...

We report an outbreak of botulism that occurred in July 2002 in a group of 12 Alaskan Yu'pik Eskimos who ate blubber and skin from a beached beluga whale. Botulism death rates among Alaska Natives have declined in the last 20 years, yet incidence has increased.
We describe a case of botulism infection in a patient who had undergone laparoscopic appendectomy, an occurrence not previously described in the literature. This case exemplifies the need for coordination between clinical and public health personnel to ensure the immediate recognition and treatment of suspected botulism cases.
