The station location problem consists of placing new stations along the railway tracks of an existing network in order to increase the number of users. In this paper we consider the problem for a railway network consisting of two intersecting lines forming an angle α. An approach for solving the problem in polynomial time for sufficiently large angles α is presented.

In this experimental work both qualitative (flow visualisation) and quantitative (laser Doppler anemometry) methods were applied in a wind tunnel in order to describe the complex 3-dimensional flow field in a real environment (a street canyon intersection). The main aim was an examination of the mean flow, turbulence and flow pathlines characterising a complex 3-dimensional urban location. The ...

Traffic signals and traffic flow models have been studied extensively in the past and have provided valuable insights on the design of signalling systems, congestion control, and punitive policies. This paper takes a slightly different tack and describes what happens at an intersection where the traffic signals are malfunctioning and stuck in some configuration. By modelling individual vehicles...

With the growth of urban road traffic volume and the increase of road network density, correlation between adjacent road intersections is becoming more and more obvious. An intersection traffic signal adjustment tends to affect the smooth traffic flow of a number of adjacent intersections. Its congestion may gradually spread to a few blocks and regions all around the intersection. Therefore, in...

The operations of freeway ramp metering and urban traffic network signal control are independent in most areas. Such situation may cause some conflict between traffic streams of the two subsystems, or, at least, their dynamic interactions have not been taken into account from an overall system viewpoint. Traffic performance can be improved if the controls of these two subnetworks are integrated...

Traffic accidents at urban intersections result in a huge cost to society in tenns of death, injury, lost productivity, and property damage. Unfortunately, the elements that effect the frequency of intersection accidents are not well understood and, as a result, it is difficult to predict the effectiveness of specific intersection improvements that are aimed at reducing accident frequency. Usin...

A typical urban traffic network is a complicated large-scale stochastic system which consists of many interconnected signalized traffic intersections. Thls paper develops a decentralized real-time adaptive control strategy for the traffic networks based on Markov decision theory. Computer simulation results of this new approach on a five intersection traffic network indicate significant improve...

One of the important characteristics of VANETs is the multi-hop communications, which provides Vehicleto-Vehicle(V2V) communication for many applications. In order to adapt to mobility in high speeds and limited-time communication links, traffic aware routing was proposed in many research works. As a type of position based routing protocols, traffic aware routing utilizes vehicles’ positions an...

Intersection left-turning restriction is one of the important ways to solving the road congestion of the builtup area; however, how to set scientifically and rationally is the key. A bi-level programming model was making under the minimum the premise entire traffic network access time by using the stochastic traffic assignment model which is more appropriate. The upper planning described the in...

Automatic incident detection and characterization is urgently require in the development of advanced technologies used for reducing non-recurrent traffic congestion on urban traffic. This paper presents a new method using data mining to identify automatically freeway incidents. As a component of a real-time traffic adaptive control system for signal control, the algorithm feeds an incident repo...
