AIMS To assess the effect that the duration of face-down posturing has on the outcome of macular hole surgery. METHODS A literature search was conducted to identify studies related to posturing duration following macular hole surgery. Where appropriate, studies were compared in a meta-analysis. The Mantel-Haenszel fixed-effect method was used to calculate the summary statistics. The main outcom...

In this paper, the author extends and further develops research and theory on the relationship between cultural taste and social networks by examining the effects of strength of preference in different cultural domains on the relative closure of personal networks. The results show that as the number of strong preferences held by an individual increases, so do the chances that any two of his or ...

Zigzag pocket machining (or 2D-milling) plays an important role in the manufacturing industry. The objective is to minimize the number of tool retractions in the zigzag machining path for a given pocket (i.e., a planar domain). We give an optimal linear time dynamic programming algorithm for simply connected pockets, and a linear plus O(1) time optimal algorithm for pockets with h holes. If the...

Following the work of Sen, we consider the correspondence between extremal black holes and string states in the context of the entropy. We obtain and study properties of electrically charged black hole backgrounds of tree level heterotic string theory compactified on a p dimensional torus, for D = (10− p) = 4 . . . 9. We study in particular a one–parameter extremal class of these black holes, t...

nnovativeness nowledge heterogeneity etwork structure Structural holes theory suggests a variety of possible explanations for the empirically observed relationship between structural holes and individual managerial performance. However, little has been done to disentangle onemechanism fromanother. This paper empirically tests amediatedmoderationmodel that distinguishes between the five differen...

We describe a technique for combined fluid-gas exchange and phacoemulsification 2 weeks after macular hole surgery to achieve rapid visual rehabilitation. The procedure uses a standard cataract set and requires minimal vitreoretinal expertise. We encountered no significant complications and obtained long-term outcomes comparable to those with conventional management.

Polygons with holes must be handled in digital cartography, 2D and 3D modelling, image analysis and picture generation. The Dissassociative Area Model (DAM) described in this paper uses polygonal units of uncut space, termed primitive regions, in the representation of the geometric and topoiogical properties of a set of areal entities. Algorithms and a data structure are presented which extract...

We review the recent optimizations of gravitational N -body kernels for running them on graphics processing units (GPUs), on single hosts and massive parallel platforms. For each of the two main N -body techniques, direct summation and treecodes, we discuss the optimization strategy, which is different for each algorithm. Because both the accuracy as well as the performance characteristics diff...

We explicitly compute the entropy of an extremal dyonic black hole in heterotic string theory compactified on T 6 or K3 × T 2 by taking into account all the tree level four derivative corrections to the low energy effective action. For supersymmetric black holes the result agrees with the answer obtained earlier 1) by including only the Gauss-Bonnet corrections to the effective action 2) by inc...
