BACKGROUND Communicating the results of randomised controlled trials may present challenges for researchers who have to work with communities and policy-makers to anticipate positive outcomes, while being aware that results may show no effect or harm. METHODS We present a case study from the perspective of researchers in South Africa about the lessons learnt from communicating the results of ...
In addition to transmission involving extracellular free particles, a generally accepted model of virus propagation is one wherein virus replicates in one cell, producing infectious particles that transmit to the next cell via cell junctions or induced polarized contacts. This mechanism of spread is especially important in the presence of neutralizing antibody, and the concept underpins analysi...
Few reports describe the reactivation of latent herpes simplex virus causing encephalitis (HSVE) in patients undergoing brain radiation therapy and a concomitant steroid regimen. The role for steroid use in the treatment of patients with HSVE has not been fully elucidated. We report the case of a female patient immunosuppressed by steroids and brain radiation who developed HSVE and responded to...
The organization of DNA within the HSV-1 capsid has been determined by cryoelectron microscopy and image reconstruction. Purified C-capsids, which are fully packaged, were compared with A-capsids, which are empty. Unlike A-capsids, C-capsids show fine striations and punctate arrays with a spacing of approximately 2.6 nm. The packaged DNA forms a uniformly dense ball, extending radially as far a...
Passively immunized hairless mice were inoculated cutaneously with herpes simplex virus. Thirty-nine days later, when the primary cutaneous lesions had completely healed, the mice were treated subcutaneously with prednisone. Within 12 to 30 days after starting prednisone treatment, herpesvirus was recovered by skin swabs from 12 of 71 (17%) of the treated mice. This new model has potential appl...
218 Indian Dermatology Online Journal | Volume 8 | Issue 3 | May‐June 2017 Many viruses including HHV6 and HHV7 have been proposed as causative agents for pityriasis rosea, although there is no conclusive evidence. Here, we presented a case of pityriasis rosea coexisting with oral HSV1 infection. Our case is unique because purpuric pityriasis rosea has not been associated with HSV1 previously. ...
Resistance to aciclovir (ACV) among Herpes simplex virus (HSV) isolates is increasingly being reported in the literature particularly in immunocompromised patients. However, there is only limited data available from India despite widespread use of ACV in our hospital. A cross-sectional study was hence conducted to determine the aciclovir (ACV) susceptibility of HSV 1 and 2 isolates using a dye ...

Four patients with scrotal ulceration were seen during a period of 9 months. All of them were HIV-positive homosexual men with coexisting skin conditions. Herpes simplex virus was not isolated from any of the ulcers, but a variety of bacteria was recovered. It is suggested that multiple factors peculiar to HIV-positive individuals may account for the development of such ulcers.
With various human clinical, epidemiological, and ex perimental data together with basic carcinogenesis ex perimentation, a working hypothesis of the development of cervical cancer is presented. Initiation may involve a carcinogen (perhaps herpesvirus type 2) altering the sus ceptible metaplastic cervical cell that is active in adoles cence and during pregnancy. Promotion by factors per haps re...
