Nocardia spp. are Gram-positive, partially or variably acid-fast filamentous, branching rods of aerobic actinomycetes [1]. The most common primary site for infection in man is the respiratory tract [1,2]. Brain abscess is the most common clinical manifestation of central nervous system (CNS) infection [1]. The majority of the patients affected have underlying chronic diseases or suffer from end...

BACKGROUND Tuberculosis (TB) remains as one of the most serious infectious diseases in the world. Pulmonary tuberculosis can occur with other pulmonary diseases caused by opportunistic organisms such as Nocardia spp. particularly in immunocompromised patients. Therefore, diagnosis of co-infection at the early stage of the disease could be lifesaving. OBJECTIVES The goal of this study was to d...

The soil-borne pathogen Nocardia sp. causes severe cutaneous, pulmonary, and central nervous system infections. Against them, co-trimoxazole (SXT) constitutes the mainstay of antimicrobial therapy. However, some Nocardia strains show resistance to SXT, but the underlying genetic basis is unknown. We investigated the presence of genetic resistance determinants and class 1-3 integrons in 76 SXT-r...

Nocardia farcinica infections are rare and potentially life threatening. Identification is based on growth at 45 degreesC, opacification of Middlebrook 7H10 agar, and resistance to antibiotics. We describe a case of fatal pulmonary N. farcinica infection in a patient with pneumoconiosis that was diagnosed by culture of sputum onto selective media.

The draft genome sequence of Nocardia jinanensis, an opportunistic pathogen that can cause skin infections, reveals genes that may contribute to the lifestyle and pathogenicity of N. jinanensis The genome also reveals the biosynthetic capacity of N. jinanensis in producing mycolic acids, siderophores, and other polyketide and nonribosomal peptide-derived secondary metabolites.

Twenty-two cases of nocardial infections were diagnosed in our city between 1977- 1998. All patients whose clinical specimens showed Nocardia spp. at Gram stain, which were further confirmed by culture, were selected to be included in the study. Data from patients who were cured were compared with those from patients who died by statistical tests using EPIINFO version 6.04 software. Six isolate...

We describe a patient with mycetoma or Madura foot, in which histopathological stains of the bone and surface cultures suggested three different organisms including Nocardia species as the cause. Criteria for the diagnosis of the organisms, differentiation between colonizer and pathogen, and significance of mixed infections are discussed.

Pemphigus is a chronic blistering mucocutaneous disease, classified in immunobullous skin diseases. Infections, particularly septicemia due to Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeroginosa are the most common and dangerous disorders due to immunosuppressive therapy in this disease. Infection with nocardia is rare, so that only 6 cases have been reported yet. Herein, we report a 56-year-old m...
