background and objectives: the therapeutic options for diseases caused by escherichia coli are limited. in this study we investigated the presence of virulence factors among enteropathogenic escherichia coli (epec) strains and their antibiotic resistance patterns. the isolates were also checked for the presence of class1 integrons and gene cassettes. materials and methods: this study included 7...

conclusions high mdr isolates of e. coli were observed in this study. the significant association between class 1 integrons and resistance to ciprofloxacin, nalidixic acid, co-trimoxazole, amoxicillin, ceftazidime and tetracycline showed that class 1 integrons have an important role in resistance to these antibiotics in this region. results the highest rate of resistance was observed toward cep...

Background and purpose: Due to the emergence of antibiotic resistance bacteria, treatment of urinary tract infection is becoming more problematic. Integrons are mobile genetic elements that play an important role in dissemination and accumulation of resistance genes of multidrug resistance in bacteria. The aim of the present study was to determine the antibiotic resistant profile, frequency of ...

We examined Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. from US hospitals for class 1 integrons. Of 320 isolates, 181 (57%) were positive; association of integrons with resistance varied by drug and organism. Thus, determining integron epidemiology will improve understanding of how antibacterial resistance determinants spread in the United States.

We investigated the prevalence of multidrug resistance, production of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs), and presence of class 1 and 2 integrons in 150 clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae from northwest Iran by performing phenotypic confirmatory tests and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis. Of the 150 isolates, 149 (99.3%) were multidrug resistant (MDR). Of the MDR isolate...

Forty-two Salmonella isolates obtained from diseased swine were genetically characterized for the presence of specific antimicrobial resistance mechanisms. Twenty of these isolates were characterized as S. Typhimurium DT104 strains. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis was used to determine genetic relatedness and revealed 20 distinct genetic patterns among the 42 isolates. However, all DT104 isola...

OBJECTIVE To analyze integrons gene cassettes Class I among Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolates from Sudan and to determine their effect on the prevalence of resistance to antimicrobials. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted at 6 hospitals in Khartoum State, Sudan between April and August 2011. Escherichia coli (n=133) isolated from clinical specimens of patients were included. Is...

Miniature inverted repeat transposable elements (MITEs) have been identified flanking class 1 integrons. We have identified and characterized a 439-bp MITE-like structure in seven Acinetobacter species isolates from Portugal and Brazil. The complete sequence similarity of the elements and flanking regions suggests that MITEs may act as mobilizable vectors for the dissemination of integrons.

We examined the distribution of class I integrons and SXT elements in Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor strains, isolated in Calcutta, India, before and after the V. cholerae O139 outbreak in 1992. Class I integrons, with aadA1 gene cassette, were detected primarily in the pre-O139 strains; the SXT element was found mainly in the post-O139 strains.

Antimicrobial resistant Escherichia coli (n=331) isolates from humans with bloodstream infections were investigated for the presence of class 1 and class 2 integrons. The integron cassettes arrays were characterized and the findings were compared with data from similar investigations on resistant E. coli from meat and meat products (n=241) produced during the same time period. All isolates were...
