Defects in Au-catalysed CdTe nanowires vapour-liquid-solid-grown on polycrystalline underlayers have been critically evaluated. Their low-temperature photoluminescence spectra were dominated by excitonic emission with rarely observed above-gap emission also being recorded. While acceptor bound exciton lines due to monovalent metallic impurities (Ag, Cu or Na) were seen, only deeper, donor-accep...

Probiotics are live microorganisms that confer a health benefit on the host. Duolac-Gold is a mixture of six probiotic bacteria containing three species of Bifidobacteria, two species of Lactobacillus, and Streptococcus thermophilus [corrected]. The aim of this study was to assess the anti-inflammatory effects of Duolac-Gold in an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) mouse model. IBD was induced by...

Finding appropriate systems with a large spin splitting of metallic surface-state band which can be fabricated on silicon using routine technique is an essential step in combining Rashba-effect based spintronics with silicon technology. We have found that originally poor structural and electronic properties of the Au/Si(111) √3 x √3 surface can be substantially improved by adsorbing small amoun...

Gold alloys with Cu contents of 10 mass%, 20%, and 30% were used for morphological observation of porous surface structures after heating at 800 degrees C in air followed by pickling with acid solution. With increasing Cu content in the gold alloy, the internal oxidation zone became well-developed in the alloy matrix. The mechanism by which a porous structure was formed on the surface of a gold...

British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan’s speech to the South African houses of parliament on 3 February 1960 has become firmly associated with the process of decolonisation in British Africa. Macmillan’s speech, however, had first been delivered almost unnoticed to an audience in Accra, the capital of independent Ghana, only a few days previously. If in South Africa he attempted to explain the...

Real-time optical monitoring of the electron-transfer process was achieved and modulated on individual gold nanoparticles functionalized with graphene. We found that charge accumulation on single gold nanorods (GNRs) depends on the rate of Faradaic reaction, which is synchronized with double-layer charging.

This is the first report of SERS switching 'on and off' using laser induced plasmonic heating of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) coated hollow gold nanoshells (HGNs). The degree of Raman enhancement for these thermosensitive SERS nanotags was controlled by plasmonic tuning of the properties of the HGNs.

Our ability to interpret seismic observations including the seismic discontinuities and the density and velocity profiles in the earth's interior is critically dependent on the accuracy of pressure measurements up to 364 GPa at high temperature. Pressure scales based on the reduced shock-wave equations of state alone may predict pressure variations up to 7% in the megabar pressure range at room...
