This thesis describes the implementation of an automatic speech recognition system based on surface electromyography signals. Data collection was done using a bipolar electrode configuration with a sampling rate of 5.77 kHz. Four feature sets, the shorttime Fourier transform (STFT), the dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DTCWT), a non-causal time-domain based (E4-NC), and a causal version of ...

Several functional differences have been reported among the three human e2, e3, and e4 alleles of apolipoprotein E (apoE). One functional difference lies in the antioxidant potential of these alleles; e4 has the poorest potential. Interestingly, e4 also correlates with increased oxidative damage in the Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain, which may explain why the inheritance of the e4 allele is a r...

Gene therapy during neonatal and infant stages is a promising approach for hemophilia B, a congenital disorder caused by deficiency of blood coagulation factor IX (FIX). An adenovirus (Ad) vector has high potential for use in neonatal or infant gene therapy for hemophilia B due to its superior transduction properties; however, leaky expression of Ad genes often reduces the transduction efficien...

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is associated with neuronal loss, ynaptic damage, deposition of -amyloid, and loss of cholinrgic activity in susceptible brain regions. These three neuroathologic markers of AD are markedly modulated by the resence of the apolipoprotein e4 (APOE e4) allele in sporadic D subjects. The APOE e4 allele is also a well-known risk actor for sporadic late-onset AD. Patients bor...

Fractions obtained from partitioning of aerial methanolic extract of Euphorbia Aellenii with chloroform (E2), ethyl acetate (E3), n-butanol (E4) and water (E5) were investigated in vitro for their phytotoxicity, insecticidal, anti-leishmanial, cytotoxicity, antibacterial and antifungal activities. Sample E2 appeared to have significant phytotoxic activity. In the insecticidal screening study o...

We define normal curves in Minkowski space-time E4 1 . In particular, we characterize the spacelike normal curves in E4 1 whose Frenet frame contains only non-null vector fields, as well as the timelike normal curves in E4 1 , in terms of their curvature functions. Moreover, we obtain an explicit equation of such normal curves with constant curvatures.

Two mutants containing large deletions in the E4 region of the adenovirus genome H5dl366 (91.9-98.3 map units) and H2dl808 (93.0-97.1 map units) were used to investigate the role of E4 genes in adenovirus DNA synthesis. Infection of KB human epidermoid carcinoma cells with either mutant resulted in production of large concatemers of viral DNA. Only monomer viral genome forms were produced, howe...

BACKGROUND Population allele frequencies of apolipoprotein E (APOE) vary by geographic region. The purpose of this study is to summarize and evaluate published estimates for the prevalence of APOE e4 carrier status among the population diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease (AD) by geographic region and country. METHODS A systematic review of English-language publications from January 1, 1985, th...

Adenoviruses infect epithelial cells lining mucous membranes to cause acute diseases in people. They are also utilized as vectors for vaccination and for gene and cancer therapy, as well as tools to discover mechanisms of cancer due to their tumorigenic potential in experimental animals. The adenovirus E4-ORF1 gene encodes an oncoprotein that promotes viral replication, cell survival, and trans...
