OBJECTIVES To find a suitable method for detecting zinc sulfate in adulterated urine. METHODS Two rapid spot tests to detect the presence of zinc sulfate in urine were developed. RESULTS Addition of 3 to 4 drops of 1N sodium hydroxide solution to approximately 1 mL of urine containing zinc sulfate led to the formation of a white precipitate, which was soluble in excess sodium hydroxide. Entomosporium leaf and berry spot, which is caused by the fungal pathogen Entomosporium mespili, can cause up to 100% yield loss in Amelanchier alnifolia (saskatoon) in years when weather conditions are conducive to disease development. In an effort to optimize the effectiveness and minimize the use of fungicides, a dynamic diseaseforecasting model was developed. The model uses a disease pressu...

Overwhelming evidence suggests that edible small and soft-fleshed berry fruits may have beneficial effects against several types of human cancers. We analyze 2-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau vortices at critical coupling, and establish asymptotic formulas for the tangent vectors of the vortex moduli space using theorems of Taubes and Bradlow. We then compute the corresponding Berry curvature and holonomy in the large area limit.

A cocktail of six lytic bacteriophages, SalmoFresh™, significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the number of surface-applied Salmonella Kentucky and Brandenburg from stainless steel and glass surfaces by > 99% (2.1-4.3 log). Both strains were susceptible to SalmoFresh™ in the spot-test assay. Conversely, SalmoFresh™ was unable to reduce surface contamination with a Salmonella Paratyphi B strain that was...
