The new primary standard for low-energy electronic brachytherapy sources for the United States is described. These miniature x-ray tubes are inserted in catheters for interstitial radiation therapy and operate at tube potentials of up to about 50 kV. The standard is based on the realization of the air kerma produced by the x-ray beam at a reference distance in air of 50 cm.

background: absolute dosimetry of external beam radiotherapy is carried out by the use of ionization chambers. these chambers must be calibrated at a standard dosimetry laboratory before any use in clinical dosimetry. the secondary standard dosimetry laboratory of iran (ssdl) has the duty of calibrating the ionization chambers used in radiotherapy centers in iran. materials and methods: the pre...

The parallel-plate free-air ionization chambers are used for X-rays air-kerma rate standards at National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ), National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST). The diaphragms are used to free-air chambers to fix the air volume of ionizing region in chambers. It means that absolute air-kerma rates are defined for collimated x-ray beams, beca...

PURPOSE To study the effect of different filters on the dose response curves of the Gafchromic XRQA2 film. To measure the kV XVI cone-beam CT (CBCT) surface dose received during 3D and 4D imaging protocols in three body regions (head and neck, chest and pelvis). METHODS GafChromic XR- QA2 film (International Specialty Products, Wayne, NJ) dose response curves were generated for three irradiat...

The new NCRP Report No. 147 includes methodology to determine x-ray protective shielding for CT scanner rooms. This methodology assumes fixed values of the scatter fraction per centimeter (kappa) for the peripheral axis of the head and body CT phantoms. An investigation was performed to determine kappa for different makes and models of CT scanner and examine the consequences of the differences ...

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to survey image quality and the entrance surface air kerma for patients in radiographic examinations and to perform comparisons with diagnostic reference levels. SUBJECTS AND METHODS In this multinational prospective study, image quality and patient radiation doses were surveyed in 12 countries in Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe, covering 45 hospitals....

Monte Carlo calculations are frequently used to analyse a variety of radiological science applications using low-energy (10-1000 keV) photon sources. This study seeks to create a low-energy benchmark for the MCNP Monte Carlo code by simulating the absolute dose rate in water and the air-kerma rate for monoenergetic point sources with energies between 10 keV and 1 MeV. The analysis compares four...

Since publication of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Task Group No. 43 Report in 1995 (TG-43), both the utilization of permanent source implantation and the number of low-energy interstitial brachytherapy source models commercially available have dramatically increased. In addition, the National Institute of Standards and Technology has introduced a new primary standar...
