Respiratory response to selective activation of vagal afferents in the peripheral airways was investigated in anesthetized, open-chest, and artificially ventilated rabbits. Phrenic activity was used as an index of central respiratory drive before and after injection of hypertonic saline (8.1%, 0.1 ml) into the periphery of the lung to stimulate the afferents. The amplitude of "integrated" phren...
Central sleep apnea (CSA) describes a group of conditions in which cessations in air flow occur without respiratory effort. In contrast, obstructive sleep apnea patients have ongoing respiratory effort during respiratory events. However, considerable overlap exists in the pathogenesis and clinical presentation of obstructive sleep apnea and CSA. A good working knowledge of the mechanisms underl...
BACKGROUND In patients with limb girdle dystrophy the relative contribution of peripheral factors (respiratory muscle weakness, and lung and/or airway involvement) and central factors (blunted and/or inadequate chemoresponsiveness) in respiratory insufficiency has not yet been established. To resolve this, lung volumes, arterial blood gas tensions, respiratory muscle strength, breathing pattern...
Aminophylline is a respiratory stimulant commonly used for the treatment of central apnea. Experiences from clinical practice, however, revealed that aminophylline is not reliably effective in preterm infants, whereas it is normally effective in infants and mature patients. In an established animal model for postnatal development of respiratory control mechanisms, we therefore examined the hypo...
Several studies demonstrate that, within the ventral medullary surface (VMS), excitatory amino acids are necessary components of the neural circuits involved in the tonic and reflex control of respiration and circulation. In the present study we investigated the cardiorespiratory effects of unilateral microinjections of the broad spectrum glutamate antagonist kynurenic acid (2 nmol/200 nl) alon...
A case of temporary acquired central hypoventilation following craniopharyngioma surgery is presented. This is a complication which has not been previously described in suprasellar surgery. Potentially mechanisms of the respiratory disorder are discussed. The most likely etiology is felt to be respiratory drive depression stemming from hypothalamic injury. (J Pediatr Neurol 2004; 2(3): 165-168).
OBJECTIVES Reduction of breathing variability is associated with adverse outcome. During mechanical ventilation, the variability of ventilatory pressure is dependent on the ventilatory mode. During neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA), the support is proportional to electrical activity of the diaphragm (EAdi), which reflects the respiratory center output. The variability of EAdi is, ther...
