Environmental light entrains the rat pineal N-acetyltransferase rhythm which controls melatonin production. One day after 1 min light pulses applied before midnight, or after delays in the evening switch off of light, or after a delay of the light-dark cycle, the evening N-acetyltransferase rise and the morning decline are phase delayed almost to the same extent. Consequently, the pattern of th...

Eis protein is reported to enhance the intracellular survival of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in human macrophages. Eis protein is not only known to skew away the immunity by disturbing the protective T(H)1 response, but aminoglycoside acetyltransferase activity of Eis is reported to regulate autophagy, inflammation and cell death. Here we have gained insight into the structure-function propertie...

2-Amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) is a heterocyclic amine carcinogen prevalent in the human diet. To exert its mutagenic and carcinogenic effects, PhIP undergoes bioactivation to N-hydroxy-PhIP followed by O-esterification via cytosolic acetyltransferases or sulfotransferases to form DNA adducts. We investigated the role of cytosolic acetyltransferases and sulfotransferases...

Choline acetyltransferase activity, which is rate limiting in acetylcholine biosynthesis, was measured in the four heart chambers of guinea pigs subjected to (1) sham surgery, (2) constriction of the ascending aorta, (3) constriction of the descending thoracic aorta, and (4) constriction of the pulmonary artery. After 30 days when hypertrophy and heart failure were fully established, choline ac...

The aim of this study was to determine the association of n-acetyltransferase-2 polymorphisms and anti-tuberculosis drug-induced hepatotoxicity in Iranian pulmonary tuberculosis patients. Acetylating phenotypes was studied in 50 Iranian pulmonary tuberculosis patients using metabolic ratio of plasma acetyl-Isoniazid to Isoniazid. The association between hepatotoxicity and the n-acetyltransferas...

1. Michaelis constants of goldfish brain choline acetyltransferase were found to depend on the concentration of the second substrate present and on the temperature to which the fish had been adapted. 2. Primary plots constructed from results obtained with enzyme prepared from cold-adapted or warm-adapted fish indicated that synthesis of acetylcholine took place by a sequential mechanism. 3. The...

The yeast GCN5 (yGCN5) transcriptional coactivator functions as a histone acetyltransferase (HAT) to promote transcriptional activation. Here, we present the high resolution crystal structure of the HAT domain of yGCN5 and probe the functional importance of a conserved glutamate residue. The structure reveals a central protein core associated with AcCoA binding that appears to be structurally c...

Changes in gene expression are thought to be involved in neuronal plasticity associated with learning and memory. Although acetylation of lysine residues on histones by histone acetyltransferases (HAT) is an obligatory component of transcription, HAT activity has been largely ignored in studies of the nervous system. We developed a new model for studying novel taste learning using novel solid f...

Amino-acid sequences around two lipoic acid residues in the lipoate acetyltransferase component of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex of Escherichia coli were investigated. A single amino acid sequence of 13 residues was found. A repeated amino acid sequence in the lipoate acetyltransferase chain might explain this result.

Acetyl Coenzyme A-dependent N-, O- and N,O-acetylation of aromatic amines and hydrazines by arylamine N-acetyltransferases is well characterised. Here, we describe experiments demonstrating that human arylamine N-acetyltransferase Type 1 and its murine homologue (Type 2) can also catalyse the direct hydrolysis of acetyl Coenzyme A in the presence of folate. This folate-dependent activity is exc...
