Studies of neurotransmitter metabolites in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were initially focused on depressive illness. Although several studies have demonstrated low concentrations of the serotonin metabolite, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), and the dopamine metabolite, homovanillic acid (HVA), in depressed patients, these early studies may have been biased by concomitant administration of ant...

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine whether aggression and serotonergic dysfunction are related in the absence of a history of suicidal behavior. Although serotonergic dysfunction has been implicated in aggressive and impulsive behavior, most studies of such behavior have included individuals with a history of suicide attempts. Low concentrations of CSF 5-hydroxyindoleacetic ac...

1. Noradrenaline: Hechtman /12/ argued for a role for frontal dopamine (DA) and noradrenaline (NA) in ADHD, where Oades /20/ has described lateralised functional impairments. Mechanisms (e.g. via alpha-2 sites) for stimulating low NA activity in ADHD children /9/ in order to promote interactions with mesocortical DA have been discussed /1, 3/. We described with indicators of overall transmitter...

Human cancer is caused by the interplay of mutations in oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes and inherited variations in cancer susceptibility genes. While many of the tumor initiating mutations are well characterized, the effect of genetic background variation on disease onset and progression is less understood. We have used C. elegans genetics to identify genetic modifiers of the oncogenic RA...

Comparison of C.S. F. H. V. A and 5-HIAA levels of 20 Schizophrenics and 9 non-schizophrenic controls revealed no statistically significant difference between HVA levels but the 5-HIAA levels were significantly less in Schizophrenics (p < 0.05) than in controls. The significance of these findings is discussed.

OBJECTIVE To determine if urinary 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) excretion is of prognostic value for overall survival (OS) in patients with a gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumour (NET) and to compare the prognostic value with patient characteristics, ENETS/WHO grading, ENETS TNM staging and biomarkers. DESIGN AND METHODS Data was collected from patients with a gastrointestinal NET or ...

Concentration gradients of homovanillic acid (HVA), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG), were assessed in 762 successive CSF fractions (2 ml lumbar CSF) from 15 patients with the adult hydrocephalus syndrome (AHS) and 11 patients with hydrocephalus of other causes (mixed group). A mean volume of 49.6 (SD 11.8) ml CSF was removed in the AHS group and 5...

The levels of [3H]-5-HT and [3H]-5-HIAA in P2-fraction from rats treated with a single dose of imipramine were lower at 2, 5 and 10 min after intraventricular administration of [3H]-5-HT, compared with control animals, though these levels were statistically insignificant. Thereafter, however, the values became higher than in the controls. After long-term administration of imipramine, the levels...
