Ventricular septal defect (VSD) can be associated with various complications such as aortic regurgitation (AR). AR in VSD come from a deficiency or hypoplasia of the conal septum which leads to abnormal apposition in diastole and prolapse of the poorly supported noncoronary or right coronary cusp through the VSD into the right ventricle resembling subpulmonic stenosis and subsequently results i...

OBJECTIVES Postinfarction ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a rare, but feared, complication after acute myocardial infarction. Although numerous techniques and materials have been used, the best technique has not yet been settled upon. We present a novel technique of VSD closure through the VSD via right ventricular (RV) incision and assess short- and mid-term outcomes. METHODS Between Apri...

Voltage-dependent potassium (Kv) channels provide the repolarizing power that shapes the action potential duration and helps control the firing frequency of neurons. The K(+) permeation through the channel pore is controlled by an intracellularly located bundle-crossing (BC) gate that communicates with the voltage-sensing domains (VSDs). During prolonged membrane depolarizations, most Kv channe...

Surgical site infection (SSI) continues to be an issue in abdominal surgery, especially for contaminated (class III) and dirty-infected (class IV) wounds. Vacuum sealing drainage (VSD) was reported effective in the management of various types of wounds or skin grafts. Our goal was to investigate the efficacy of prophylactic VSD to better orient their medicosurgical care of high-risk incisions f...

A 56-year-old male presented with resting dyspnea and chest discomfort for several years. During transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, a spontaneously healed membranous type ventricular septal defect (VSD) with malaligned interventricular septal wall, aneurysmal changes, a subaortic ridge and a double-chambered right ventricle (DCRV) was observed. When combined with DCRV, VSD with...

OBJECTIVE Vascular sealing devices (VSD) can be safely used in thyroid surgery. The purpose of this survey was to investigate general surgeons' approach to the use of VSD in thyroid surgery in Turkey. MATERIAL AND METHODS A questionnaire containing 10 items was prepared and announced via the Dialogue in Endocrinology Society website. The results were then analyzed. RESULTS Fifty surgeons (6...

Left-to-right (L-R) shunting across a ventricular septal defect (VSD) often involves a direct VSD-pulmonary arterial component (jet) that surges from the VSD immediately into the pulmonary artery. We used the thermodilution technique in dogs with acute experimental VSD to quantify this component. In dogs with supracristal VSD (n = 7), the direct component represented 76 + 4% (mean ± SE) of the ...

Hybrid approach becomes a promising conception of an alternative treatment for muscular ventricular septal defects (VSD) closure in infants. In this paper we report epicardial echocardiography imaging that enabled successful hybrid procedure performed in premature infant referred for surgical correction of a large perimembraneous VSD with simultaneous perventricular approach for concomitant mus...

BACKGROUND Dysregulation of voltage-gated cardiac Na(+) channels (NaV1.5) by inherited mutations, disease-linked remodeling, and drugs causes arrhythmias. The molecular mechanisms whereby the NaV1.5 voltage-sensing domains (VSDs) are perturbed to pathologically or therapeutically modulate Na(+) current (INa) have not been specified. Our aim was to correlate INa kinetics with conformational chan...

We present a 77-year-old female with recent myocardial infarction complicated by antero-apical ventricular septal defect (VSD) and quick development of low cardiac output. Using interrupted horizontal mattress sutures VSD closure was successfully performed on the beating heart. Transthoracic echocardiography at the four-month follow-up did not reveal residual VSD.
