An analysis of the growth curve obtained in vitro for influenza virus in chorioallantoic membrane has been made using two known viral inhibitors, methoxinine and alpha-amino-alpha p-methoxyphenylmethanesulfonic acid. The action of these compounds has been shown to be specific for particular phases of viral development. Further, this action is sequential indicating that the inhibited phases do n...
BACKGROUND It is recognized that hepatitis C virus subtypes (1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 2c and 3a) originated in Africa and Asia and spread worldwide exponentially during the Second World War (1940) through the transfusion of contaminated blood products, invasive medical and dental procedures, and intravenous drug use. The entry of hepatitis C virus subtypes into different regions occurred at distinct tim...
During the period from August 1997 to March 1998, two thousand samples of cultured Penaeus semisulcatus postlarvae and subadults were collected from five hatcheries and 20 growout farms distributed in three provinces along the costs of Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea. Based on growth signs, LM and TEM histopathology, Hepatopancreatic Parvo-like Virus (HPV) were identified from the samples. The HP...
We extended a computer simulation of viral intracellular growth to study a parasitic antiviral strategy that diverts the viral replicase toward parasite growth. This strategy inhibited virus growth over a wide range of conditions, while minimizing host cell perturbations. Such parasitic strategies may inhibit the development of drug-resistant virus strains.
Human immunodeficiency virus can spread through target cells by transmission of cell-free virus or directly from cell-to-cell via formation of virological synapses. Although cell-to-cell transmission has been described as much more efficient than cell-free infection, the relative contribution of the two transmission pathways to virus growth during multiple rounds of replication remains poorly d...
Recombinant simian virus 5 (rSV5) mutants containing substitutions in the M-F intergenic region were generated to determine the effect of increased readthrough transcription on the paramyxovirus growth cycle. We have previously shown, using an SV5 dicistronic minigenome, that replacement of the 22-base M-F intergenic region with a foreign sequence results in a template (Rep22) that directs very...
Cells. HeLa cells (American Type Culture Collection, Rockville, Md.) were grown in 80 ml culture medium in Roux bottles. Cells were grown in Eagle's medium (7) which contained Hanks' balanced salt solution (1 1), 10% bovine serum, 100 @zg/mlstreptomycin sulfate, and 100 units/ml penicillin G. Bottles were incubated at 36°in an humidified atmosphere of 5% CO2 , and the cells were passed by tryp...
BACKGROUND Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus infection in Norwegian pigs was largely subclinical. This study tested the hypothesis that the infection causes negligible impact on pigs' growth performance in terms of feed conversion efficiency, daily feed intake, daily growth, age on reaching 100 kg bodyweight and overall feed intake. A sample of 1955 pigs originating from 43 breeding herds was classi...
Methods for continuous production of viruses, and operation of the virustat, an apparatus in which such production was accomplished, were studied. Continuous production requires a separate continuous host growth chamber, such as the chemostat, and a multiunit virus growth chamber into which the virus-inoculated host cells are led. Successful continuous output of MS-2 and varphiX174 viruses, the...
