Phylogenetic analysis indicates that microbial arsenic metabolism is ancient and probably extends back to the primordial Earth. In microbial biofilms growing on the rock surfaces of anoxic brine pools fed by hot springs containing arsenite and sulfide at high concentrations, we discovered light-dependent oxidation of arsenite [As(III)] to arsenate [As(V)] occurring under anoxic conditions. The ...

Chromosome analysis of lymphocytes from patients who had been exposed to arsenic showed frequent structural and numerical aberrations, even with an interval of decades since the last exposure. The in vitro addition of sodium arsenate induced the same chromosome changes--even to extreme of chromosome pulverizations--upon lymphocyte cultures from healthy subjects. Radioactive incorporation studie...

This study evaluated the ameliorative and prophylactic effects of 2 different doses of polyphenolic-rich fraction of Garcinia kola (PPRFGk) seeds on the histology and hormones of pituitary-testicular axis of male Wistar rats. Thirty-five male Wistar rats (150-200 g) were divided into 7 groups of 5 rats each. Groups I and II were given distilled water (0.5 mL/day) for 8 days followed by propylen...

The structure of the title compound tris-odium aluminium bis-(arsenate), Na(3)Al(AsO(4))(2), is built up from AlO(4) and AsO(4) corner-sharing tetra-hedra, forming an undulating two-dimensional framework parallel to (100). The layers are constituted of large Al(6)As(6)O(36) rings made up from six AlO(4) and AsO(4) tetra-hedra in which two sodium cations are situated, the third sodium cation bei...

An arsenite-oxidizing Hydrogenobaculum strain was isolated from a geothermal spring in Yellowstone National Park, Wyo., that was previously shown to contain microbial populations engaged in arsenite oxidation. The isolate was sensitive to both arsenite and arsenate and behaved as an obligate chemolithoautotroph that used H(2) as its sole energy source and had an optimum temperature of 55 to 60 ...

In the title compound, tris-odium dicobalt arsenate diarsenate, Na₃Co₂AsO₄As₂O₇, the two Co atoms, one of the two As and three of the seven O atoms lie on special positions, with site symmetries 2 and m for the Co, m for the As, and 2 and twice m for the O atoms. The two Na atoms are disordered over two general and special positions [occupancies 0.72 (3):0.28 (3) and 0.940 (6):0.060 (6), respec...

Arsenic is a widespread contaminant of both land and water around the world. Current methods of decontamination such as phytoremediation and chemical adsorbents can be resource and time intensive, and may not be suitable for some areas such as remote communities where cost and transportation are major issues. Bacterial decontamination, with strict controls preventing environmental release, may ...

In this study, we examined the effects of simultaneous adsorption of aqueous arsenate and uranyl onto aluminum oxide over a range of pH and concentration conditions. Arsenate was used as a chemical analog for phosphate, and offers advantages for characterization via X-ray absorption spectroscopy. By combining batch experiments, speciation calculations, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray d...

Iron oxide nanoparticles adsorb fluorescently labeled DNA oligonucleotides via the backbone phosphate and quench fluorescence. Arsenate displaces adsorbed DNA to increase fluorescence, allowing detection of arsenate down to 300 nM. This is a new way of using DNA: analyte recognition relies on its phosphate instead of the bases.
