SYNOPSIS One hundred infectious mononucleosis and the same number of non-infectious mononucleosis sera were studied to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of horse erythrocytes in the diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis. Titres of horse agglutinins in infectious mononucleosis sera ranged from 28 to 7,168 with a geometric mean of 550, whereas the corresponding sheep agglutinin titres rang...
Harvard caries-resistant rats (CR) monoassociated with cariogenic Streptococcus faecalis (SF) for 150 days developed early high levels of specific SF serum agglutinins, moderate levels of salivary antibody, and little or no caries activity. Harvard caries-susceptible (CS) SF-monoassociated rats developed serum antibody more slowly and never reached the titers of the CR group. Little or no saliv...
A fatal case of agranulocytosis due to chlorpromazine is reported. Mechanisms other than immunological are generally believed to be responsible for chlorpromazine-induced agranulocytosis. However, the demonstration of a drug-specific leuco-agglutinin in the serum of this patient suggests that an immunological mechanism was responsible for the agranulocytosis.
1. Tetanolysin and antitetanolysin travel toward the cathode under the influence of an electric current. 2. The specific agg-lutinins are electro-positive. 3. The proteid matter of serum is not amphoteric but travels toward the cathode whether its reaction be acid, neutral, or alkaline. 4. The bacteria-agglutinin combination may be disassociated by means of the electric current.
The inhibition of protein synthesis in Chinese hamster V79 cells by diphtheria toxin is antagonized by the lectins concanavalin A, succinylated concanavalin A, and wheat germ agglutinin but not by Proteus vulgaris phytohemagglutinin or abrus agglutinin. The effects of concanavalin A and wheat germ agglutinin are reversed by methyl alpha-mannoside and N-acetylglucosamine, respectively. The inhib...
Dilute whole blood clots were prepared by addition of thrombin to blood diluted 1:10 in phosphate buffer. The pH of this buffer was 7.4 and the ionic strength was 0.084. Though the ionic strength was low, there was no hemolysis of red corpuscles due to the contribution to the osmotic gradient by plasma salts and proteins. In the standard assay the clot was formed by addition of thrombin at 4 de...
Background: Malarial infection associated with common hematological abnormalities like anemia, Thrombocytopenia, Hemolytic anemia. Hemolytic anemia is due to occurrence of cold agglutinins. This study throws light on the prevalence of cold agglutinins in patients with malarial infection and their detection. Method: About 150 patients diagnosed as having Malaria by Peripheral smear, QBC for mala...
A rare variant (-D-/-D-) in two generations due to consanguineous marriage was reported. The propositus (T.M., 27 years of age) delivered her second baby who suffered from severe jaundice. She had agglutinin of titer 1:64 in saline and 1:1,024 in Coomb's test against red cells of her husband (CDe/cDE). Family study revealed that T.M.'s father and his two siblings were grouped as -D-/-D-. Each o...
