While the electrical conductivity of bulk-scale group 14 materials such as diamond carbon, silicon, and germanium is well understood, there is a gap in knowledge regarding the conductivity of these materials at the nano and molecular scales. Filling this gap is important because integrated circuits have shrunk so far that their active regions, which rely so heavily on silicon and germanium, beg...

Semiconductor alloys containing silicon and germanium are of growing importance for compact and highly efficient photonic devices due to their favorable properties for direct integration into silicon platforms and wide tunability of optical parameters. Here, we report the simultaneous direct and energy-resolved probing of ultrafast electron and hole dynamics in a silicon-germanium alloy with th...

X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy was used on zoned sphalerites (ZnS) from two world-class Mississippi Valley Type deposits, the Central and Eastern Tennessee Mining district, USA, in order to investigate germanium oxidation states. Due to the low germanium concentrations of these samples, it was necessary to perform the X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in fluorescenc...

Measurements of inelastic electron tunnelling through barriers of amorphous germanium are reported. The data are analysed using a theory of the electron-phonon interaction which includes phonon correlations. The vibrational density of states obtained from the experimental data is in agreement with that expected for amorphous germanium containing a broad distribution of bond angle variations.

Eight hyper cross-linked polymers based on tetrakis(4-ethynylphenyl)germanium and tetrakis(4-ethynylphenyl)methane are presented. After investigation of their N2 adsorption properties at 77 K, the porosity of the germanium-based porous organic polymers (POPs) was modulated under acidic conditions, offering an easy and direct way, in a single step, to tune the adsorption properties.

For the high resolution spectroscopy of excited hypernuclear states a position sensitive Germanium γ–array [1] [2] has been implemented in the standard PANDA framework PANDAroot. In the simulation encapsulated n–type Germanium crystals are arranged asymmetrically to form a triple cluster [3]. The total γ–array set-up consists of 15 triple Germanium cluster detectors positioned at backward axial...

In this paper we report experimental studies carried out on two-dimensional electrons in strained silicon and two-dimensional holes in strained germanium channel modulation doped heterostructures, to understand their lowand high-field transport properties. Hall measurements were done to determine the low-field Ohmic mobility as a function of temperature ~13–300 K!. Geometric magnetoresistance t...

Non-linearities in the energy response of gas detectors in the regions of the absorption edges of the detection medium are well documented. Monte Carlo calculations show that the non-linearity results from differences in efficiencies for converting absorbed radiation into ionisation for different atomic sub-shells. Energy non-linearity in germanium-based solid-state detectors in the region of t...

Deposition of 226Ra from water on nylon was investigated. Measurements performed for different pH and different radium concentrations in the water gave similar absolute activities deposited on the foil surface. Obtained results were used to estimate the amount of 226Ra plated-out on the nylon scintillator vessel in the solar neutrino experiment BOREXINO during filling of the detector. Another p...
