BACKGROUND There are no consistent agreements on whether radiotherapy after breast-conserving surgery (BCS) could provide local control and survival benefit for older patients with early breast cancer or breast ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of radiotherapy after BCS in older patients with early breast cancer or DCIS. RESULTS Radiotherapy cou...

Individual patient data were available for all four of the randomized trials that began before 1995, and that compared adjuvant radiotherapy vs no radiotherapy following breast-conserving surgery for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). A total of 3729 women were eligible for analysis. Radiotherapy reduced the absolute 10-year risk of any ipsilateral breast event (ie, either recurrent DCIS or invas...

Margin status is surely a prognostic factor in patients undergoing breast-conserving therapy, but its impact is probably overestimated in case of adequate adjuvant radiotherapy. Radiotherapy improves local control after excision of the primary tumor in all subgroups of patients. There is, in contrast, no evidence that a certain margin width or a re-resection improves local control.

OBJECTIVE Planning of breast radiation for patients with breast conserving surgery often relies on clinical markers such as scars. Lately, surgical clips have been used to identify the tumor location. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the geographic miss index (GMI) and the normal tissue index (NTI) for the electron boost in breast cancer treatment plans with and without surgical clips....

A tangential parallel-opposed pair is almost always the technique of choice for this purpose. This technique is often performed based on 3D treatment planning. The aim of this study was to compare 3D treatment planning for two different energie...

This previously unreported Renaissance painting depicts a young woman with locally advanced breast cancer reaching out towards a healing potion in the church of Santa Maria della Grazia in Milan, that houses Leonardo da Vinci's Last supper. Today's potion may well contain neoadjuvant systemic therapy including trastuzumab that may allow breast conserving surgery and targeted intraoperative radi...
