In patients with dystonia, abnormal movements are commonly triggered or made worse by voluntary action. By means of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), we investigated changes in motor cortex excitability before the execution of wrist voluntary movements in patients with upper limb dystonia and normal control subjects. Magnetic stimulation was delivered by two Magstim 200 stimulators conne...
A mathematical model of orientation selectivity in a single hypercolumn of the primary visual cortex developed in a previous work [Ursino, M., & La Cara, G.-E. (2004). Comparison of different models of orientation selectivity based on distinct intracortical inhibition rules. Vision Research, 44, 1641-1658] was used to analyze the possible mechanisms underlying tilt aftereffect (TAE). Two altern...
Understanding the spatial dynamics of dilation in the cerebral vasculature is essential for deciphering the vascular basis of hemodynamic signals in the brain. We used two-photon microscopy to image neural activity and vascular dynamics in the somatosensory cortex of awake behaving mice during voluntary locomotion. Arterial dilations within the histologically-defined forelimb/hindlimb (FL/HL) r...
Chondrosarcoma is the second most common primary mesenchymal malignant tumor of the bone. The most common form is central chondrosarcoma and the rarest is intracortical chondrosarcoma. Here, we describe the clinical, pathological, and imaging features of a case of intracortical chondrosarcoma as well as the outcome of surgical treatment. This is the third case reported in the literature.
Intracortical hemangioma is an extremely uncommon primary bone tumor; only 11 cases have been reported in the English literature. We report a case of right tibial intracortical hemangioma with pathologic and imaging findings, including plain radiograph, MRI, and whole-body bone-scan images.
Activation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) by systemic nicotine enhances sensory-cognitive function and sensory-evoked cortical responses. Although nAChRs mediate fast neurotransmission at many synapses in the nervous system, nicotinic regulation of cortical processing is neuromodulatory. To explore potential mechanisms of nicotinic neuromodulation, we examined whether intracellul...
OBJECTIVE Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in de novo patients with Celiac Disease previously revealed an imbalance in the excitability of cortical facilitatory and inhibitory circuits. After a median period of 16 months of gluten-free diet, a global increase of cortical excitability was reported, suggesting a glutamate-mediated compensation for disease progression. We have now evaluated cross...
Loss of a sensory modality leads to widespread changes in synaptic function across sensory cortices, which are thought to be the basis for cross-modal adaptation. Previous studies suggest that experience-dependent cross-modal regulation of the spared sensory cortices may be mediated by changes in cortical circuits. Here, we report that loss of vision, in the form of dark exposure (DE) for 1 wee...
