The Caenorhabditis elegans GATA transcription factor elt-1 has previously been shown to have a central role in the specification of hypodermal (epidermal) cell fates and acts several cell divisions before the birth of hypodermal cells. Here we report that elt-1 also has essential functions during subsequent development. Reporter gene studies show that elt-1 expression is maintained in lateral s...
Cell fate determination and cell migration are two essential events in the development of an organism. We identify mig-5, a Dishevelled family member, as a gene that regulates several cell fate decisions and cell migrations that are important during C. elegans embryonic and larval development. In offspring from mig-5 mutants, cell migrations are defective during hypodermal morphogenesis, QL neu...
Abstract Purpose The Cunoniaceae are a major component of the New Caledonian flora with 91 endemic species that highly unusual in multiple metals hyperaccumulated different species. This makes it an ideal model system for studying nature hyperaccumulation phenomenon. Methods X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) scanning all herbarium collections was undertaken at Herbarium Caledonia to reveal ...
BACKGROUND Cellulite is characterized by a thickened hypodermal fat layer, along with hypodermal fat lobules that extend upward into the dermis, expanding and stretching the fibrous septae that separate the fat lobules. Eventually, the septae sclerose, contract, and harden, holding the skin at an inflexible length while the surrounding tissue continues to expand. OBJECTIVES The author evaluat...
Crustaceans are covered by a cuticle that does not grow. In order for an individual to grow, the cuticle must periodically be shed (ecdysis). Replacement of the old cuticle with a new one depends on processes that require precise timing and control, yet the nature and location of these controls remain unclear. A candidate site for them is within the hypodermal microvilli. These cellular structu...
Correct cell fate choice is crucial in development. In post-embryonic development of the hermaphroditic Caenorhabitis elegans, distinct cell fates must be adopted in two diverse tissues. In the germline, stem cells adopt one of three possible fates: mitotic cell cycle, or gamete formation via meiosis, producing either sperm or oocytes. In the epidermis, the stem cell-like seam cells divide asym...
The gene mab-21, which encodes a novel protein of 386 amino acids, is required for the choice of alternate cell fates by several cells in the C. elegans male tail. Three cells descended from the ray 6 precursor cell adopt fates of anterior homologs, and a fourth, lineally unrelated hypodermal cell is transformed into a neuroblast. The affected cells lie together in the lateral tail epidermis, s...
Parasitic filarial nematodes that belong to the Onchocercidae family live in mutualism with Wolbachia endosymbionts. We developed whole-mount techniques to follow the segregation patterns of Wolbachia through the somatic and germline lineages of four filarial species. These studies reveal multiple evolutionarily conserved mechanisms that are required for Wolbachia localization to the germline. ...
Histomorphology of chemoradiotherapy-induced oral mucositis in patients with gastrointestinal cancer
Objective: To study the histomorphological changes of oral mucosa by observing the sections of lip buccal mucosae from patients with gastrointestinal cancer. Methods: Oral mucosae from 15 patients aged 61-80 years old who died of gastrointestinal cancer were sampled. Group A (n=10) had received high-dose chemoradiotherapy. Group B (n=10) were divided two subgroups. Group B1 (n=5) had gastrointe...
A current model for Caenorhabditis elegans vulval cell fate specification is that SynMuv genes act redundantly in the hyp7 hypodermal syncytium to repress the LIN-3/EGF inducer and prevent ectopic vulval induction of vulva precursor cells (VPCs). Here we show that the SynMuv gene hpl-2/HP1 has an additional function in VPCs, where it may act through target genes including LIN-39/Hox.
