The CCAAT box is one of the most common cis-elements present in eukaryotic promoters and is bound by the transcription factor NUCLEAR FACTOR Y (NF-Y). NF-Y is composed of three subunits, NF-YA, NF-YB, and NF-YC. Unlike animals and fungi, plants have significantly expanded the number of genes encoding NF-Y subunits. We provide a comprehensive classification of NF-Y genes, with a separation of cl...
BACKGROUND Variance in microarray studies has been widely discussed as a critical topic on the identification of differentially expressed genes; however, few studies have addressed the influence of estimating variance. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS To break intra- and inter-individual variance in clinical studies down to three levels--technical, anatomic, and individual--we designed experime...
This paper describes XRCE’s participation in Large Scale Visual Concept Detection and Annotation Task [16] and Photo Retrieval Task [17] of ImageCLEF 2009. Those tasks both use a new collection which is different and which is much larger than the ones used in past sessions. Moreover, new kinds of challenge to tackle were designed such as new categories to detect or new types of topic to deal wi...
Two fold variations in the age and sex standardised post mortem prevalence of gallstones have been demonstrated between nine British towns by Barker and his colleagues. We have examined the rates of cholecystectomy in the Districts serving seven of these towns to discover whether the incidence of operation bears any relation to this variation in morbidity. The opportunity to compare independent...
Age-related bone loss and osteoporosis have been documented, going back to antiquity, but substantial geographic ethnic variations in fracture risk are still noted today. These most striking for hip fractures, with a 10-fold difference standardized rates between the highest lowest countries; while vertebral fractures vary by two four fold worldwide. may part be due factors incurred from methodo...
The authors show by illustration that procedures used to validate the reliability of single-concentration high-throughput screens such as the signal window and Z' factor do not ensure sufficient reliability in potency estimates from concentration response assays. They develop the minimum significant ratio as a statistical parameter to characterize the fold change between 2 compounds run in the ...
In this work we present a probabilistic model to estimate summaries of Affymetrix GeneChip probe level data. Comparisons with two different models were made both on a publicly available dataset and on a study performed in our laboratory, showing that our model performs better for consistency of fold change.
Biochemical regulatory networks governing diverse cellular processes such as stress-response, differentiation and cell cycle often contain coupled feedback loops. We aim at understanding how features of feedback architecture, such as the number of loops, the sign of the loops and the type of their coupling, affect network dynamical performance. Specifically, we investigate how bistability range...
In this work, we study the volume ratio of the projective tensor products `p ⊗π `q ⊗π `r with 1 ≤ p ≤ q ≤ r ≤ ∞. We obtain asymptotic formulas that are sharp in almost all cases. As a consequence of our estimates, these spaces allow for a nearly Euclidean decomposition of Kašin type whenever 1 ≤ p ≤ q ≤ r ≤ 2 or 1 ≤ p ≤ 2 ≤ r ≤ ∞ and q = 2. Also, from the Bourgain-Milman bound on the volume rat...
BACKGROUND To facilitate the interpretation of meningococcal meningitis epidemiology in the "African meningitis belt", we aimed at obtaining serogroup-specific pooled estimates of incidence, carriage and case-carrier ratios for meningococcal meningitis in the African meningitis belt and describe their variations across the endemic, hyperendemic and epidemic context. METHODS We conducted a sys...
