A seasonal distribution was observed for rotaviruses in sewage by using indirect immunofluorescence. Levels were low from May through September and generally higher during winter and spring. In contrast, no seasonal pattern was observed for total enteroviruses. Limitations of the indirect immunofluorescence assay and enzyme immunoassay for environmental samples are discussed.

Twenty-five human dental periapical lesions were obtained. The lesions were frozen, sectioned, and examined for the presence of immune complexes by employing an anticomplement immunofluorescence (ACIF) technique. Twenty-three of the periapical specimens were positive for antigen-antibody complexes. No staining was noted in the two lesions that were histologically diagnosed as periapical scar ti...

The results of antinuclear antibody tests using the indirect immunofluorescence technique may be reported as a description of the pattern and the intensity of fluorescence obtained at a certain dilution. If quantitative results are required titration is necessary. Such titrations may vary greatly between different laboratories. The present study involving 26 laboratories shows an improvement of...

Conventional tube cell culture was compared with a 2 day and 5 day spin-amplified shell vial indirect immunofluorescence assay for the detection of mumps virus in swabs from the area of Stensen's duct. The sensitivity and specificity of the shell vial assay were 95.9 and 100%, respectively. The shell vial detected 66.3% of the positive cultures within 2 days of inoculation while the first posit...

Anti-Malassezia furfur monospecific polyclonal antibodies was produced by repeated immunization of rabbit with Malassezia furfur yeast cells mixed with Freud adjuvant. The antibody titres of respective rabbit's serum samples prior to and after each immunization against M. furfur were assayed by indirect immunofluorescence technique using the M. furfur whole yeast antigen fixed in Teflon coated ...

Plasmodium vivax reemerged in the Republic of Korea (ROK) in 1993, and is likely to continue to affect public health. The purpose of this study was to measure levels of anti-P. vivax antibodies using indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) in border areas of ROK, to determine the seroprevalence of malaria (2003-2005) and to plan effective control strategies. Blood samples of the inhabitants i...

Rabbits were inoculated with untreated whole cells of 16 strains of Haemophilus ducreyi. Homologous titres in an indirect immunofluorescence test ranged from 1/320 to 1/1280. No cross reactions, or very few, were observed between antisera to these strains and 22 other (possible taxonomically related) species, strains, and genera. A large diversity in types of antigen was observed among the stra...

A test for farmer's lung is described employing the indirect fluorescent antibody technique. The test compared very favourably with standard precipitin tests, detecting 88% of a series of positive cases, as opposed to 38% detected by a precipitin test. The fluorescent antibody test, in addition, introduced some measure of quantitation of the serological response in the disease.

An outbreak of an epidemic disease occurred in a specified-pathogen-free (SPF) breeding colony of rats. The clinical signs and the post-mortem findings were characteristic for Tyzzer's disease. The causative agent, Bacillus piliformis, was demonstrated microscopically in ileum, liver and myocardium, and transmitted to mice where its pathogenicity appeared to be similar to that of another strain...

The prevalence of Taiwan monkeys with antibodies to Epstein-Barr virus, as detected by the indirect immunofluorescence technique, was lower than that of healthy persons in Taiwan.
