Electrothermal heating is one of radio frequency tuning method in nanoelectromechanical resonators with magnetomotive transduction. This study confirmed that the surface roughness of the nanoresonator affects the electrothermal tuning performance under moderate conditions at room temperature. The effect of surface roughness on electrothermal tuning is complicated and involves interactions of me...
This work demonstrates the use of thin film heaters to enhance electrothermal pumping in microfluidic systems. Thin film heating electrothermal pumping is more efficient than Joule heating alone. Numerical simulations of an asymmetric electrode array are performed to demonstrate the advantages of incorporating thin film heaters. This specific simulation shows that thin film heater electrotherma...
Electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry has five major advantages for measurements of trace metals in biological materials, in comparison to measure ments by conventional flame atomic absorption analysis: (1) Trace metal contami nation is minimized by avoidance of preliminary chemical extractions and addi tions of reagents; (2) Sample volumes are small (1 to 50 /*1). The entire sample ...
This study demonstrates a monolithic 1 x 4 optical switch composed of planar micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) integrated with silicon nitride (SiN) waveguides. The switching motion is induced by an optimized cascaded chevron electrothermal actuator, which produces analog, precise, and large stroke for low voltages. Nanoscale displacement measurements show repeatability on the order 10 nm ...
AC-driven electrothermal flow is used to enhance the temporal performance of heterogeneous immuno-sensors in microfluidic systems by nearly an order of magnitude. AC electrokinetic forces are used to generate electrothermal flow, which in turn produces a circular stirring fluid motion that enhances the transport of diffusion-limited proteins. This provides more binding opportunities between sus...
Aluminium-coated micromirrors driven by electrothermal and electromagnetic actuations have been demonstrated for 3-D variable optical attenuation applications. Three types of attenuation schemes based on electrothermal, electromagnetic and hybrid, i.e. combination of electrothermal and electromagnetic, actuations have been developed. In addition, two different designs have been fabricated and c...
Abstract Artificial muscles provide a unique solution for wearable rehabilitation robots (WRRs) because they are compliant, compact, and lightweight. Twisted coiled polymer actuators (TCPs) artificial from thermally activated fibres. They present high power density, linearity, stress strain compared to other muscles. Nevertheless, as TCPs require heat start, their main barrier widespread use in...
Present paper studies the current harmonic spectrum generated by functioning of an electrothermal installation with electromagnetic induction. In order to analyze the electrical parameters that characterize the electrothermal installation functioning, measurement sets were accomplished using two methods. The first method consists in using a power and energy quality analyzer and the second metho...
This paper describes a novel modeling methodology for electrothermal effects in large mixed-signal circuits. It is accomplished by developing analog event-driven electrothermal and thermal models in an analog hardware description language (AHDL). The large-scale mixedsignal circuits represented by the analog event-driven models can be analyzed more efficiently than using standard analog models.
