Background & Aims : About 60% of term infants and 80% of preterm infants are affected by jaundice in the neonatal period which 5-10 % of them require phototherapy. Phototherapy causes the separation of mother and infant, interfering with breastfeeding and there are also some concerns regarding to destruction of the genetic materials. Methods which might reduce the rate of photo would be use...

Nutrient losses from banked breast milk during tube feeding were determined from laboratory models. Large fat losses occurred, continuous feeding giving rise to significantly greater losses than bolus feeding. More fat loss occurred with low flow rates and there were also significant protein losses.

Forty three infants under 1400 g were fed by a bolus nasogastric, continuous nasogastric, or transpyloric route. There were more complications with transpyloric feeding and no identifiable benefits in the growth rate, oral energy input, or chosen biochemical indices of nutrition. Bolus or continuous nasogastric feeds rather than transpyloric are better routine methods in infants of low birth we...

Continuous infusion systems used for enteral nutrition support in the neonatal intensive care unit deliver as little as 60% of the fat in human milk to the neonate. This study determined the effect of mixing common feedings for preterm infants in the feeding bag and tubing on fat losses during enteral feeding. Laboratory models were developed to assess the contribution of various mixing techniq...

Changes in gastric pH of leopard sharks Triakis semifasciata were quantified as an indicator of feeding frequency and ration size. Continuous in situ measurements of gastric pH were made in captive adult leopard sharks using an autonomous pH/temperature probe for periods ranging from 5-16 days. Instrumented sharks were fed meals of squid at different ration sizes. Gastric fluid samples were als...

Infants unable to maintain oral feeding can be nourished by orogastric tube. We have shown that orogastric continuous feeding restricts muscle protein synthesis compared with intermittent bolus feeding in neonatal pigs. To determine whether leucine infusion can be used to enhance protein synthesis during continuous feeding, neonatal piglets received the same amount of formula enterally by oroga...
