Vibrio cholerae 2012EL-1759 is an environmental isolate from Haiti that was recovered in 2012 during a cholera outbreak. The genomic backbone is similar to that of the prototypical V. cholerae O1 classical biotype strain O395, and it carries the Vibrio pathogenicity islands (VPI-1 and VPI-2) and a cholera toxin (CTX) prephage.
The haemolytic properties of El Tor vibrios are usually utilized to differentiate them from the non-haemolytic cholera vibrios. In some freshly isolated Vibrio el tor strains, however, the haemolytic property may be ill-developed and this test may then fail to reveal the true identity of the strains. In order to overcome this difficulty a number of tests have been developed. Investigations repo...
That the strains of cholera vibrio isolated m epidemic and sporadic outbreaks differed frona each other on immunological grounds was first demonstrated by Japanese workers as early as 1913 ; they called them 1 original' and ' varied respectively (Kabeshmia, 1913). It was left to Gardner and Venkatraman (1935) however to confirm the existence of serological sub-types within the classical sub-gro...

Since then, cases of cholera are identified each year, both in adults and children in Pakistan. Sir,?I would be grateful for any of your readers' comments on the following hypothesis concerning the use of methylene blue in the treatment of cholera, the argument for its use being as follows : (1) The cholera vibrio on culture produces nitrites. (2) In the human gut the cholera vibrio probably produces nitrites from nitrogenous bowel content. (3) Absorption of nitrites would occur, having b...
Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection caused by the ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The causative agent of this disease was originally described by Filippo Pacini in 1854, and afterwards further analyzed by Robert Koch in 1884. It is estimated that each year there are 1.3 million to 4 million cases of cholera, and 21 000 to 143 000 deaths worldwide ...
The growth and survival of Vibrio cholerae O-1 and Vibrio cholerae non O-1 in foodstuffs, especially in shellfish was studied in order to cast some light on the ecology of cholera epidemic. Alteration in the number of Vibrio cholerae O-1 and Vibrio cholerae non O-1, stuck to raw fish and raw meat, drinks (cola, alkali ion drink, milk, coffee) and soy sauce was observed in a settled temperature ...
